National Heights Baptist Church ~ E-News          May 2018
May is always exciting at National Heights.  The month includes a celebration of moms on Mother's Day, a celebration of associational missions as we receive the annual Jim Joslin GCBA Offering, and final preparations for Vacation Bible School, scheduled for the first week in June (June 4-8).

Join me in welcoming Michelle Miller as our new Minister to Preschool and Children.  Michelle is no stranger to National Heights.  She, Phillip and their daughter Kasidee have been a part of our congregation for many years.  Michelle has served faithfully in several of our ministries, including our nursery.  We welcome Michelle into this new role and look forward to all the ways God is going to use her ministry to reach children and their families for Christ.

Thank you for all your kind words and expressions to me and my family this past month.  Thank you. especially, for your gifts to missions and to the Envision campaign in honor of our twenty years at NHBC.  It is hard for me to believe God has blessed me with twenty years as your pastor.  It has been my joy and privilege to witness all the ways God has worked through the people of this great church.  Thank you for letting me be a part of your lives these last two decades.

God has great days ahead for NHBC.  I can't wait to see what God is going to do through you!

Welcome to our new Children's Minister
National Heights is excited to welcome our new Children's Minister.  Michelle is a member of our church, along with her family and has served in the nursery for quite sometime. She is currently a teacher at Pershing Elementary and has taught at Robberson Community School.  We, as a committee, are very excited about her vision for children's ministry, her knowledge of child development, her love for our church and her love and desire to share Christ within the community.
In checking with Michelle's references the committee received only very positive reports. A reply from the principal at Robberson Community School: "Michelle is a sweetheart.  She taught at Robberson Community School for six years.  She built very strong relationships with her kids and parents...On a personal level, I know she has a very calm demeanor and a deep personal faith."  Another reply from a past coworker: Michelle has a wonderful relationship with her students and their parents, oftentimes getting invited to their birthday parties, which she most often attends.  You all are very lucky to have her.
The position of Children's Minister is 12-15 hours a week which Michelle will perform on Sundays, Wednesdays, Saturdays and any evenings that are required.  She is very open to communicating with staff and families during time at church, through her cell phone, and/or emails.  We are very excited at the fact she is willing to join our church staff in this very important ministry.

Deacon's Corner
What is Mother's Day? It is the day I which children recognize and honor their Mothers. This year this day falls on Sunday, May 13th.  The question must be asked, "Shouldn't we recognize and honor our Mothers every day?" The answer is YES, we should. Everyday our Mothers sacrifice for us and gives us comfort and the values we carry with us thought out our lives. I think Isiah 66:13 says it best: "As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you: and you will be comforted over Jerusalem."

Mothers are our refuge and comfort since the day we were born. Our Mother's eyes gazing down upon us gives us the comfort in the time of need, and conversely, give us that look which will motivate us when we need it the most.  As a child, we learn how to connect, care, and love from that gaze. Our Mother's gaze upon us gives us the strength and confidence we need to go out into the world and meet the challenges we will face. This translates into caring, loving, understanding, and above to show comfort for our fellow man.

Is this not the same principles that Jesus commands us to do as Christians in Matthew 22:34-39: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

Just remember, every day is Mother's day, Take a moment to stop and reflect on what your Mother means to you and the sacrifices she has made for you to...... connect, care, comfort, and love.  Then, reflect on the sacrifice Jesus made to show us what connection, caring, comforting and love is all about.  To All Mothers: HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!
~ Scott Foley, Chairman of Deacons

Each donation and in-kind gift helps to make our guests feel more at home, including the magazines you donated. Our families spend so much of each day with their hospitalized child and at the end of that stressful day, they just want to sit down and unwind. We know picking up a magazine for a few minutes can do just that. Thank you for sharing hope and helping to mend the hearts of these special families and children! ~Ronald McDonald House of the Ozarks

I was very hungry and I asked God to help me get something to eat today. He actually told me to look to my left and I noticed this Blessing Box. I got me something to eat for the day. Thank you for your ministry and caring. God bless your church. ~James
