Celebrated every May, Older Americans Month (OAM) is led by the Administration for Community Living (ACL). Established in 1963, OAM is a time to recognize older Americans' contributions, highlight aging trends, and reaffirm commitments to serving older adults in our communities.

This year’s theme, “Champion Your Health,” focuses on prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility as cornerstones of healthy aging. It encourages older adults to take an active role in their health — advocating for themselves, accessing preventive care, and making informed decisions that support independence.

Michigan residents have additional opportunities to join this month’s celebrations. Each year, sponsored by the Area Agencies on Aging Association of Michigan and Michigan’s sixteen Area Agencies on Aging, Senior Action Week (May 11-15) and Older Michiganians Day (May 13) are designed to focus attention on public policy issues of importance to older adults, their families, and caregivers.

The Aging Network has prioritized four platform issues for 2026:

  • Rebalance State Medicaid Expenditures to Support Home and Community Based Services (HCBS)
  • Increase Access to Non-Medicaid HCBS
  • Modernize and Enhance Access to MI Choice
  • Support Unpaid Family and Informal Caregivers

Volunteer Spotlight

The Volunteer Spotlight for May is... LaSandra Jones, the President of TCOA's Advisory Council!

About LaSandra, in her own words:

LaSandra Renee Jones (Brown) was born and raised in Lansing, MI. LaSandra was born with a congenital birth defect that would land her in the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor for a major surgery at 6-years-old. She had never forgotten how the nurses had treated her while she was in the hospital as a little girl, so she decided she wanted to become a nurse.

She applied and was accepted into the RN Program at LCC. She was rolling along in the classes pretty good, but because she was also being guided by the Vocational Rehabilition Agency, they discouraged her from pursuing a career as a nurse because of all the walking she would have to do. So, she ended up dropping out of the program and out of college. LaSandra worked various jobs, but landed a job with the MEA, until marriage, which took her to Chicago. Two years later she was back in Lansing and her husband passed away. She was able to land a job with the State of Michigan.

LaSandra adopted two children (an 18-month-old girl, and a year later a 2-year-old boy) as a single person, which she felt was one of her greatest achievements. During her raising of these children, she met and married her second husband (who passed away 18 years later).

When her daughter neared graduation from high school, while LaSandra was filling out financial aid paperwork for her to attend college, she decided that it was time for her to go back to school and finish what she had started years ago. She enrolled in Cornerstone University and pursued an Associate Degree in Human Services, and went on to receive a Bachelor Degree in Ministry Leadership.

LaSandra feels her calling has been to serve the underdog and vulnerable of society, and she has a passion to see all people be able to have an opportunty to have their basic needs met, and be treated as those who were created in the image of God. One of her mottos is, “When you know better, you can do better.”

Besides currently serving as President of Tri-County’s Advisory Council, LaSandra also serves as President of the Potter-Walsh Neighborhood Association; is a member of the Greater Lansing Clergy Forum; leads a group of 15 women in an international online weekly Bible Study; is founder and leader of the Let’s Grow Together Community Garden, and is involved in many other community endeavors. She believes the possibilities are endless when a community works together to make positive changes!

✨ Thank you, LaSandra, for your care and advocacy for individuals in the community! ✨
