Older Americans Month Logo and the phrase "Flip the Script on Aging: May 2025"

Celebrated every May, Older Americans Month (OAM) is led by the Administration for Community Living (ACL). Established in 1963, OAM is a time to recognize older Americans' contributions, highlight aging trends, and reaffirm commitments to serving the older adults in our communities.

This year’s theme, "Flip the Script on Aging," focuses on the importance of combating ageism to transform how society perceives, talks about, and approaches aging by challenging stereotypes and highlighting the benefits of healthy aging.

Michigan residents have additional opportunities to join this month’s celebrations, as Michigan's Area Agencies on Aging will lead Senior Action Week (May 5-9) and Older Michiganians Day (May 7) to bring attention to important issues relating to the independence and well-being of older adults.

This year's platforms are:

  • Expand Access to MI Choice
  • Increase Access to Home and Community-Based Services
  • Support Family and Informal Caregivers

Here's how you can participate in these awareness efforts:

Volunteer Spotlight

The Volunteer Spotlight for April is... Kathy, a Meals on Wheels volunteer!

Kathy started volunteering for Meals on Wheels in Ingham County during her lunch hour. In 2017, she started delivering meals for Clinton County and has been delivering in Clinton County ever since. Kathy shares that she really enjoys connecting with the participants, and there are times that she is able to sit and visit with the participants she delivers to.

When Kathy retired, she started to pick up a route every Monday.

When she's not volunteering with TCOA, Kathy volunteers at two different elementary schools in pre school and first grade. She's a proud mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother!

How did Kathy hear about Meals on Wheels? Kathy used to deliver meals with her mother! Kathy got to go along and remembered all of the fun that she had as a child. You could say Kathy is a lifelong Meals on Wheels volunteer! :)

Thank you so much, Kathy, for bringing smiles to so many in the community!
