Although the Charles River has come far, there's still a lot of work to do before swimming is a regular occurrance in the Charles. This is the only day you can swim in the river thanks to a Special Use DCR permit and decades of advocacy and restoration! Learn more about our Charles River Swimming Initiative here.

23rd Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup
Thanks to our volunteers and sponsors for attending our Earth Day Charles River Cleanup!
At the Charles River Conservancy, every day is Earth Day. All year, we look forward to seeing volunteers give back to the Charles River and its parks with us at the Annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup. At the 23rd annual cleanup this year, hundreds of volunteers joined us to celebrate the Earth! We wouldn't be able to do this work without the help of volunteers like you, our partners, and our sponsors. Thanks to everyone who made this event possible.
With our volunteers' help, we gathered and disposed of:
2320 cigarette butts
1108 foam pieces
1819 glass pieces
2820 plastic pieces
667 bottle caps
817 food wrappers
489 bottles

April Recap
We've had a great month of volunteer events and giving back to the parks. Boston Beer Company raked leaves and revoved invasive plants at the Herter Park Amphitheater, and Berkshire Partners removed invasive garlic mustard, painted benches, and cleaned up around the Artesani playground in Herter Park.
Open Volunteer Event
This month, we will be working in Cannalonga Park in Watertown through Watertown Helps Out. Volunteers will assist generally with park cleanup. Registration is full, but you can plan to join us in June and register now!
-
Saturday, June 4, 10:00am-12:00pm - We will be working in Herter Park, Boston, to clean up the Herter Park Memorial Gardens. Spots for 20 people. Please email Sasha at svallieres@thecharles.org to register and for more details.

Charles River Trivia Night
Do you consider yourself an expert on all things Charles River? Join us for trivia night!
The CRC and the Leventhal Map & Education Center are excited to host a night of trivia on our beloved Charles River! Join us on Thursday, May 26th from 6pm to 7:30pm in the Newsfeed Cafe at the Central Library in Copley Square. We'll test your ability to answer questions related to the river's history and surrounding geographies. Registration is encouraged but not required, and map prizes will be presented to the winning teams! The Leventhal Center's trivia series is presented through their current environmental justice exhibition, More or Less in Common: Environment and Justice in the Human Landscape.

In the News
If you want to take a swim in the Charles River, they can't stop you on June 18 (Boston Magazine)
Charles River Swimming Day will take place on June 18th, with both City Splash and the One Mile Swim on the same day for the first time ever. The Charles River Conservancy and Charles River Swimming Club present these events for community members, visitors, and residents to jump and swim in the Charles River! Boston Magazine reports "it's a pretty remarkable achievement that after years of neglect and misuse, the river is safe to occasionally swim in."

The 23rd Earth Day cleanup of the Charles River brings us closer to swimming its water again (Cambridge Day)
Last month, the CRC, Esplanade Association, Charles River Watershed Association (CRWA), Waltham Land Trust, and the Emerald Necklace Conservancy hosted the 23rd annual Earth Day Charles River Cleanup. Created by CRWA in 1999, this event is a part of the National River Cleanup organized by American Rivers. This year, the CRC hosted cleanup events Friday and Saturday and had over 700 registrants who wanted to give back to the river! This annual event helps us spread the word about our dream for a swimmable Charles River.
