Invention Convention 2017 (IC 2017) is an annual regional and statewide invention competition for students in grades K through 8. Now in its 19th year, Invention Convention has engaged more than 15,000 students from this region in creative problem solving since its inception in 1998. The 2017 semi-finalist prototypes are now on view at miSci. The top 25 finalists will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on May 18th at 5:30 PM.

Author's Corner: Anita Sanchez

Author Anita Sanchez will be at miSci to present her newly-published book,
Karl, Get Out of the Garden! Carolus Linnaeus and the Naming of Everything. Sanchez's book is based on the great scientist Carolus Linnaeus, who spent his childhood exploring his father's garden and classifying living organisms into a system that would became today's system of scientific classification.

miSci supporters from around the country gathered to celebrate miSci's meteoric progress over the last decade as well as the museum's promising trajectory for the future. Amid delicious food, silent auction treasures, beautiful music, and a zany photo booth - the night was full of mingling and merriment.

First Challenger Learning Center Corporate Mission with MVP
The Challenger Learning Center
at miSci held its first Corporate Mission in March with employees of MVP Health Care. The group did a team-building activity, Rendezvous with a Comet mission scenario, and debrief on bringing mission skills to the workplace. The Corporate Mission solidified skills in teamwork, scenario planning, strategy screens, problem-solving, decision-making, and communication.

Rising Stars Camp-In

The Dudley Observatory and miSci hosted visitors for a camp-in under the stars. Visitors were treated to a star-gazing party by the Dudley Observatory Rising Stars Interns. The Rising Stars set their telescopes up across the miSci lawns for visitors to observe various points in the sky.

Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson: The Cosmic Perspective. The standing-room only crowd learned about the upcoming Great American Solar Eclipse and why they should NOT observe the sun without protection.

miSci Awarded Grant for miSciGirls
Soroptimist International of Schenectady
miSci received a $400 grant from
Soroptimist International of Schenectady for miSciGirls,
a program designed for girls aged 8-13 with activities in Engineering & Design, Earth & Space, and Physical Science. The programming was based in part on PBS' SciGirls show and SciGirls Connect and taught by miSci female educators.
miSciGirls was part a NSF grant-funded program from Twin Cities PBS.

Challenger Adventures
Conquer the final frontier with the
Challenger
Learning Center! Fly to space, conduct experiments, maneuver robotic arms, build a probe, and return to Earth in just an hour.
*Visitors must be at least 5 years old to participate in a Challenger Adventure. Visitors 5-7 must each be accompanied by an adult. Groups with a child between 7 and 12 only need one accompanying adult.

Introduce preschoolers to nanoscience with an educator-led reading of
Horton Hears a Who by Dr. Suess.
Little Wonders of Science inspires curiosity through stories, play, and special hands-on activities specifically created for children ages 3-5. Held on the third Friday and Saturday morning of every month, the Little Wonders of Science program introduces new STEM topics monthly.
Come early for a special 10am showing in miSci's planetarium of "One World, One Sky" (additional $5/ person), and leave with the materials to continue the study of science at home.

Dudley Observatory Octagon Barn Star Party & Lecture

Join the
Dudley Observatory and AAAA for an astronomy talk and dark sky observing (weather permitting) at the Octagon Barn in Delanson, NY!
This month, Dr. Matthew Sydagis of UAlbany will talk about Gravitational Waves.
Amateur astronomers and families are invited to bring binoculars or telescopes. Telescopes will also be set up for public use. Great for older children and adults!
Free, donations appreciated.

Pick Up Your Field Goods at miSci!
miSci is now a pick-up location for Field Goods, a year-round local produce delivery service. With Field Goods, customers receive 5-8 different fruits and vegetables plus optional add-ons - all from small farms in the region. miSci will receive its deliveries every Friday. For every bag picked up at miSci, the museum receives a $1 donation!
