Happy Older Americans Month! This year's theme is "Communities of Strength" You all have built resilience and strength over your lives through successes, failures, joys, and difficulties. There is no better proof of your resilience than this pandemic. Your stories and contributions help to support and inspire others. This OAM, we celebrate the strength of older adults and the Aging Network, with special emphasis on the power of connection and engagement in building strong communities. The Older Adults programs at Educational Alliance has put together an array of special events to celebrate you. They are highlighted below in our "Special Events and New Workshop Series" section. We hope to see you all there!

Concert in Motion In Partnership with Manny Cantor Children Center:

Imagination Play Project with Linda White (Arts/Education)

Join us for an hour of fun and self-expression at a new, pop-up workshop facilitated by the Imagination Play Project. Meet new and old friends, as well as renowned educator Linda White. Participants will use a variety of readily available objects and materials that encourage exploration, engage the senses, and inspire creativity.
Linda White, M.S.W., M.A.Ed., is the founder and creator of Imagination Play Project, and an experienced educator and clinician. As a “play curator” Linda draws inspiration from the schools in Reggio Emilia, Italy, and the rich aesthetic landscape of NYC.

Working Through Loneliness Support Group with Kelly Hamon, Social Work Student Intern (Education)

Loneliness affects everyone at some point in life, and has been especially felt by many during the Covid-19 pandemic. In the zoom meeting we will be sharing our personal experiences of loneliness and learn how to cope with those feelings through Positive Psychology theory and skills. This will be a closed group with a maximum occupancy of eight people.

Zumba® is cardio dance fitness to world music rhythms. This class features mostly Latin music and low-impact routines you can do safely at home.

Tai chi is an art that promotes balance, strength, grace, and flexibility, and it promotes a meditative mood with its “dance of quiet motion.” This is a beginner level class.

Yoga for Bone Health with Chinatamni Kansas "C" (Exercise)
Tuesdays | 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Classic yoga class focusing on stretching, joint mobility, balance, posture, and bone density support. Safe for folks with injuries and osteoporosis. Energizing for all. No need to worry about modifications – this class is designed for you. Participants must be able to get down and up off the floor at least twice during class.

Body Smart-Felderkrais with Andrew Carter (Exercise)
Tuesdays | 12:00 – 1:00 PM
Using very slow and gentle movements, students are guided through movement patterns that improve their alignment, balance and flexibility, while reducing stress and strain in muscles and joints. Often done on a soft carpet or mat, this class is restorative, relaxing and improves posture.

Please contact the instructor first for an orientation and conversation. Andrew will ask questions regarding any injuries you may have sustained or physical challenges you face in order to ensure a beneficial experience.

Chinese Folk Dance with Jun Zhou aka Dream (Exercise)

Mr. Dream offers an authentic experience, teaching easy-to-pick-up movements from Chinese culture. Enjoy for recreational & learning purposes. Bilingual instruction in English & Mandarin.

Meditation, Mindfulness & Relaxation Practices with
Bonnie Rose Marcus & Ollie Gillett, Chaplain Interns (Education)
Tuesdays | 6:00 – 7:00 PM
Meditation and relaxation practices promote rest, calm, focus and stability. Join us to cultivate and maintain wellness in body and mind. Open to those who have never meditated, as well as those who have an ongoing practice. As facilitators, Chaplain Interns from The NY Zen Center for Contemplative Care will guide participants into learning more about meditation and practicing different techniques. NYZCCC defines contemplative care as a multi-faith, relationship-centered approach to care. Contemplative caregivers seek to understand causes of suffering and to explore and nurture sources of strength such as resilience and compassion.

Pilates is for every BODY. This mat class focuses on activating core strength, the elongation of postural muscles and the awareness of breath to combat the stiffness and stress that often comes with our daily activities. Open to all levels, this class will have participants feeling invigorated with a sense of strength and peace in both body and mind.

Mindfulness Meditation with Rev. Susan Turchin (Health Management)

Want to inject peace into your day or share your peace with others? Come relax and ground yourself in this workshop led by fellow Sirovich member and volunteer Susan. Nourish yourself with a guided mindful meditation practice, dropping into a place of tranquility in service to ourselves and all beings.

Movement speaks is appropriate for older adults of all ages and abilities. One participant described it as "amazing energy and joy into our lives, urging us all up onto our feet, lifting and moving arms and legs, shoulders and hips, hands and fingers until we have all, magically, become part of the dance, our bodies and brains drawn into a process of creation, imagination and celebration."

Folk Dance with Jaki Soreff (Exercise)

Have fun and work those dancing bodies with Jaki! This class focuses primarily on international folk dances, but incorporates some folk line dances too. No experience necessary. Jaki will teach you all the basics before moving on to more advanced dance routines.

Online Toy Puppet Theatre Workshop Series
with Federico Restrepo (Art)
Wednesdays | 3:15 – 4:15 PM | March 3 – May 19
Workshop Studies in Puppet Form and Performance introduces you to the use of puppetry and storytelling. You will learn techniques on building and manipulating puppets leading to the creation of a story through performance. The goal is to develop a short puppet piece, which you will perform for the public, through an Online platform.

On the 2nd & 4th weeks of each month, community partner Ansonia Music Outreach leads music-drenched and visually stimulating multi-media workshops in appreciation of opera and the arts.

Balance 101 with Demetra Tsantes (Exercise)

This chair class focuses on strengthening muscles and improving flexibility to allow for the joint stability and mobility we need for walking and completing everyday tasks around the home like carrying groceries and doing the laundry. People of all abilities, including anyone who uses an assistive walking device or wheelchair or is recovering from knee, foot, hip injuries, etc, can participate. You also have the option of completing standing work, with the chair in arms-reach. 

Yoga with Dianne Galliano AKA Rashmi (Exercise)

Whether live or virtual, in a chair, or on a mat, Yoga cultivates resilience by balancing effort with ease through gentle yoga postures, relaxation, breathing techniques, and meditation. There is a 5-minute grace period to enter this class. Please enter on-time.

In this time of many losses, this group aims to help us find balance and support, creatively exploring how to cope with loss and change. This group is open to all, regardless of experience. Artful Storytelling: Our Meaningful Histories with Ping Chong + Company (Arts/Education)

Ping Chong + Company will be leading a powerful and poignant creative storytelling workshop series.
