Greetings to Our Hub on Canal Supporters,

If it's May, it's time for the Razzle Dazzle Fashion Show. The show is the concluding event of the Razzle Dazzle Fashion Club. No program that The Hub operates is more ambitious or more impactful than this one. In early October of 2021, 22 middle and high school students gathered for the first time to tackle a year-long school project. They signed up to learn all our professional seamstresses and educators could teach them about sewing, design, and creation of garments and accessories.

These young people worked hard, 2 evening hours every week that school was in session since the beginning, plus a few Saturdays to make up for broken bobbins and the odd Covid quarantine. Seventeen "Fashionistas" made it to May. That's the most significant group we've ever had in our four years of this program. The kids learned to sew and design, but they also reached far beyond fashion and learned that they could do something hard, manage multiple issues simultaneously and achieve something meaningful.

The Fashionistas have done their part, and now it's up to you to show that you support what they've accomplished. The Razzle Dazzle Fashion Show takes place on Sunday, May 15, from 4-6pm at the Brannon Center. We're excited to report that the 4th Razzle Dazzle Fashion Show will return to the glamour and glitz of year 1, as Covid has faded from the scene. We could not be more excited for these young people. You'd be forgiven for mistaking our event for a Fashion Week runway show in New York.

The Fashionistas have worked hard and achieved much. Won't you buy a ticket and come out and support their efforts? Better yet, grab a group of friends, buy some VIP tickets and act like the show's all for you. Maybe you could wear sunglasses--Anna Wintour style. See you on May 15.

MUSIC NIGHT
The Paisley Moon Trio
Friday, May 13, 7-9 pm
Tired of the same old music? Do you like a bright and eclectic mix of musical styles? If you answered yes to either of those questions, you’re going to want to check out the Paisley Moon Trio. This all-girl band at once evokes the love songs and protest anthems of the 60s and 70s, musically layered and smoky dream-pop tunes, and coffeehouse originals. With one of the band members on violin and electric cello, a Celtic fiddle tune may find its way into the performance. The Paisley Moon Trio is a unique treat. Art in the Form of Film:
Once (2006)
Friday May 20, 5:45-9pm
A musical that is not a musical in any traditional sense Once is a deeply touching love story about two musicians who fall in love while making music together. Its plot follows a week in the lives of a street musician (played by Glen Hansard who composed all the film’s music) and an immigrant girl (Marketa Inglova) who is musically talented herself. What adds to an already charming film is that the two co-stars actually did fall in love during the film’s making and have since toured together. (more)

ARTIST'S/VOLUNTEER CORNER
Left to right:
Rita, Su, and Corinna
Su Mallow has been a valued volunteer at The Hub for almost our entire 10-year history. Her always-sunny disposition has greeted countless guests, especially on our Music Nights. Su recently celebrated a milestone birthday and was surprised by her children arriving from out of town and state, along with many relatives and friends for a true surprise party, held at The Hub. Somehow, the secret was kept from her. Amidst the revelry, we learned that Su will be "retiring" from her Hub volunteer "job" and moving south to be closer to family. We will be sad to see her go, as she's part of the family, but we do understand. Wish Su good luck in her new adventure. Thanks Su!
New Artists at The Hub
We try to keep our gallery space "in motion" so you'll find new things every time you visit. One way that happens is the addition of new artists. New artists that joined us in April included Cristina Garcia and Liz Carey.
Liz Carey presently paints in the non-objective abstract style. Her designs represent her own inner reflections. Years of international travel, work in the business world and her own personal struggles and triumphs provide the spark for her creative spirit. Among Liz's work at The Hub now are three paintings in a series that include gold leaf as part of the design.
Early in her painting career, Cristina Garcia painted fantasy art in the Art Nouveau style. Her work currently, however, features a concentration on beach and water-related themes. You'll find an series of amazing photo realistic fish paintings, such as the one above, in her display at The Hub right now.

Picassos in Pajamas

In February of this year, the City of New Smyrna Beach began a program on some Friday Evenings at The Babe James Center called Pajama Party. Two have been held so far and in both cases, The Hub on Canal has sent an art instructor to make an art project part of the evening's activities. In April, the kids created their own takes on Picasso's iconic faces design.
