Visit a Classroom and Make a Difference
The SkillsUSA Florida State Leadership and Skills Conference was held on April 18-21, 2022, in Jacksonville, FL. SkillsUSA Florida is a partnership of students, teachers, and industry working together to ensure students (and future employees) are equipped with the technical, personal, and workplace skills necessary to thrive in the workforce.
Marilyn and Ernie had an opportunity to talk with many students and asked them why they were interested in careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM). Almost all the students said in part they were attracted to careers in STEAM because of a classroom visit from someone in the industry. A powerful message from these young people and a lesson for industry representatives to get involved with educators, visit classrooms, and host company tours.

The National Science Board (NSB) Vision 2030 report (2020) lays out four central priorities for the National Science Foundation this decade. One is to “expand the geography of innovation,” which envisions innovation hubs operating in every state to help retain the nation’s leadership in the science and engineering enterprise. This analysis provides a baseline for assessing efforts to actively seed and nurture innovation clusters throughout the country, identifying areas that are exceeding expectations and others that may be falling behind.

From the lab to the coast, NSF provides critical support to prepare for hurricanes
Florida International University and the University of Florida are two colleges helping with hurricane preparedness research. Researchers are studying the structural and economic impact of hurricanes, but also understanding community response is critical to saving lives. When storms approach, cultural background, past experiences with hurricanes and worldview all shape how people respond to hurricane messaging, including whether they will evacuate. Learning the best ways to communicate information that is trusted and useful is essential to hurricane preparedness.
