CEO's Blog: Celebrating a Major Milestone
CSL has made a major commitment to bringing "asset and wealth develop ment" into the conversation about helping low-income families break the cycle of poverty. Too many of our neighbors just can't get ahead. Until families can develop assets and wealth, it's hard to move up the economic ladder.

Unfortunately, there are not a lot of ways for low-income families to develop wealth and assets. They often don't have jobs with employers that offer retirement accounts with matching incentives. The wages earned at those jobs aren't enough to meet a family's current obligations, let alone get ahead.

CSL Celebrates 50 CNAs
In January, CSL celebrated the graduation of our 50th Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) through our Bridges to Career Opportunities program. There were many partners that collaborated to achieve this milestone. A big part of the program funding was from U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds through the City of Independence. To celebrate, the City of Independence and CSL teamed up to produce a short video showing what this program has mean to the lives of the graduates.

Exciting Day for CSL Scholars!
May 1 has always been known as May Day, but in Kansas City, for the last three years, it is also KC Scholars Day. CSL Scholars is a suite of 19 donor-funded scholarships under the broader umbrella of KC Scholars.

On May 1, more than 300 Traditional KC Scholars awards were granted to Kansas City-area 11th graders. Each award is worth up to $50,000. The CSL Scholars suite of scholarships were awarded to 15 new 11th graders. Our first four awards were granted on May 1, 2018.

Stay tuned this summer to learn more about these outstanding scholars!

CSL, Mid-Continent Public Library, Fort Osage, and Comcast Team Up
In 2018, I was approached by Fort Osage School District Superintendent Dr. Jason Snodgrass about utilizing a soon-to-be vacant building as a way to better support Northeast Independence and Northeast Jackson County families.

Fort Osage maintained an Early Childhood Center on US 24 Highway for years, but in January of this year, opened the brand-new Woodland Early Childhood Center. This left the School District with about 5,000 square feet of potential to help its families, outside of the classroom. Read the entire release...

Monthly Giving. Monthly Good.
The 1916 Club is CSL's monthly giving program that allows supporters to make sustained gifts through monthly credit card charges or checking/savings account withdrawals.

In 1916, a group of 22 forward-thinking women founded CSL as a way to support children and families in need in our community. More than 103 years later, members of the 1916 Club share the same vision and provide monthly support to ensure that the mission of CSL is met every day.

By joining the 1916 Club, you can be assured that you're doing your part to make our Eastern Jackson County community a better place to live by providing resources for families to achieve economic stability.
