It's May Day!
I can remember being at Berkhalter elementary school in Oakland California in 4th and 5th grade on May , and students were dancing around the "May" pole (teather ball pole ). The event included the entire school. Teachers had tied crape paper to the tops of the poles and as the group of us danced it wove the strands. I was thinking, wow, I was already learning how to weave fiber and didn't know I was setting a course for the rest of my life.
May is a very active month, beginning with May Day. In ancient times it was a great celebration to honor the beginning of new life with the birth of lambs, rabbits , deer and other animals. It also was a time of preparation for planting with the goal to have a great harvest in the fall to hold them over through another winter season.
May is my time to knit for summer and also for the colder months. Some quit stitch work in the summer but it is a year round activity for me. Just the yarns and patterns change. We are kicking off the Spring Tee knit along. I am adding a few more pattern options. Feel free to venture out and choose your own pattern. The object is to join others and have fun working on a project together.
I finished my Havaendring cardigan by Woolfolk , Veta Romanenkova designer. I am very happy with the results. I used Silky Wool by Berroco. It makes a very comfortable fabric. It feels great against the skin and is slightly drapey. Alyson finished another scarf,"Close to You", in Baah fingering. She also made some holding the fingering and holding it with Baah Halo mohair. I have also included a few more finished items from other fiber artists.
Speaking of Silky Wool, it is great for those Summer tops. We also have Summer Solstice, Summer Sesame, Eco and Zooey. All combinations of cotton, linen and viscose, perfect for summer tops.
Thank all of you who came to the store to support us on LYS day.
I want to make sure that everyone knows about the Flagstaff Wool and Fiber Festival . The dates are May 31 and June 1st. It has classes, and demonstrations of spinning and weaving and other fiber skills. There will be vendors selling hand dyed yarns and other fiber tools. We always have a great time. Hope to see you there.
Finally, a reminder that we will be changing the shop hours for summer beginning May 1st. Monday through Friday 11 to 5, Saturday 10 to 3.
Hope to see you soon .
