WHAT IS THIS DOG?
Hi, my name is LaRoux. I was rescued from a kill shelter by my mom when I was 5 months old. I had to go to training for a long time because I was fear aggressive, but I did pass the Canine Good Citizen test and now strangers can pet me if they're careful. But don't corner me. I'm pretty mellow and get along with my 3 brothers most of the time. I'm protective of my moms (I have 2) but I do warm up quickly to guests. I mind my moms really well. I like being outside during cold weather and inside during hot weather. When I smile, I will melt your heart.

Can you guess my genetics?
My DNA results are at the end of this newsletter.

WE DID IT! WE WON FIRST PLACE IN THE
RELAY FOR RESCUE ONLINE SCAVENGER HUNT!

There are many ways you can help us besides financial donations, although we love those too! Our first place in the Relay For Rescue online scavenger hunt on April 10 won us $3,000! We all had so much fun in the process!! In this photo, the mission was to take a photo of a Paws in Prison team member wearing a Snoopy bandaid. Jill, a PIP adopter who participated in the hunt, didn't have one so she came up with a creative way to provide it, and it was accepted for 100 points! You can play from anywhere. Our deepest thanks to Az K9 Rescue. They joined the hunt with us from Arizona, where they helped us with so many of the missions!

Please join us in next year's Relay for Rescue!

If you are the adopter of a Paws in Prison pup, this next article is another way you can help us and it won't cost you a cent.
Have you adopted a Paws in Prison Dog?
If so, please submit a Love Story to the
Petco Foundation to help us win grant funds!
If you have a Paws in Prison dog right now, regardless of what year you adopted, please share your Love Story with the Petco Foundation by September 20, 2021, in 500 words or less. We could be eligible for a grant from Petco Foundation if they select one of our stories or if we have lots of stories submitted! Because we have existed since 2007, surely we have many love stories to share. Just tell them how adopting your dog has changed your life.

You may know you have a great story, but don't feel like you are a good enough writer. Petco allows us to help you edit your story, but you have to write it and submit it to them per the button below. If you want our help with editing, write your story then send it to us in an email or attached to an email in a Word document. After we edit it, we will send it back to you to review and submit to Petco. For editing help, send your story to:

Adoptions@pawsinprison.com

When you are ready to submit your story to Petco, click on the link below to apply to the Petco Love Story contest!
AMPLIFY AUSTIN MATCHING GRANTS

In addition to the donations made to Friends of Paws in Prison on Amplify Austin Day, March 3-4, 2021, we have been notified that our share of the Amplify Austin additional grant funds totaled $2,332.36. Every one of you who participated in Amplify Austin Day, regardless of the amount, contributed to this additional award! Our goal for Amplify Austin was $20,000 and we ended up at $19,838!

Each of you who donated played a part in helping us to
SAVE MORE THAN DOGS!
Paige's Paws in Prison Story

Meet Paige. Her back story is full of youth rebellion, drugs, physical and emotional abuse, and lots of bad choices. She found herself in Lockhart for drug possession and in the Paws in Prison Program. She trained 15 dogs over 6 years. This is her story in her own words.

In my first 9 months I was mad and resentful as hell. I was then transferred to the Lockhart Unit where the Paws in Prison Program is located. Looking back from my inception into the program to my release, I went from someone scared of failing so badly that I never tried anything new, to someone that was mentoring and encouraging newcomers in the program. I learned so much about myself that I never knew and may have never learned if it wasn’t for Paws in Prison. To find out that I enjoy teaching others and that I am a skilled and natural public speaker was a shock to me, because teaching and sharing your knowledge with others is an unselfish act in itself. My life is not perfect, and I still make mistakes but the skills that I acquired in this program have helped me make better choices, and these choices have enabled me to be the person I was created to be and live a life that I am both proud and grateful to live.

I have been home for 3 years this past March. I started out training at Petco then was offered a management position at a 500 dog kennel in Ft. Worth. Although I enjoyed both those jobs I was still wondering what was missing in my life. About that time I met a cutting horse trainer that raises Shorty Jack Russells [a specific Jack Russel dog breed]. We started seeing each other and before I knew it I was in love with his dogs and raising my own Shorty Jacks. We are starting construction on my new kennel where I will also board outside dogs.

Please know that my Paws in Prison experience with shelter dogs has not been forgotten. Not only am I responsible for my breeding program but I have also started a rescue for cow dogs. We have placed 22 dogs on their forever ranch. I am now expanding to farm animals. My Shorties help me move my cows around every day. Thanks to the clicker [a training device used in the PIP program to train dogs] I can actually load cows on a trailer by themselves. With 16 Jack Russell terriers, 14 horses, 6 spoiled pet goats, and the cows my life is extremely full but so rewarding. I am marrying that cutting horse trainer this year and cannot believe how fortunate I am that my love of animals has created the path for my life. I credit it all to Paws in Prison. I never would have begun this journey if I had not been a part of your program. Thanks to all of you at PIP!
