University of Alaska Southeast
All UAS campuses are in coastal ocean communities; many of their programs take advantage of the locations for marine and maritime study and career opportunities.

Juneau offers housing and a traditional campus life experience as well as on-campus and online classes. With student activities, clubs, a recreation center, and residential halls and apartments, life on the Juneau campus could be considered comparable to attending a small private college.

Ketchikan offers on-campus and online classes and is home to the UAS Maritime Training Center.

Sitka offers on-campus and online classes. The Sitka campus’ signature programs include nursing, fisheries, and construction.

Indicator of the Month:
Some Industries Saw Moderate Recovery at the End of 2020
Retail Trade, Real Estate, Rental and Leasing, and Education Services are among the industries that were initially hit hard by the pandemic but started to recover by the end of 2020. Retail employment was down about 22% in Q2 and Q3 but cam back to only a 6% loss in Q4 compared to 2019. Wages were also down 8% and 18% in Q2 and Q3. The retail industry usually sees an increase of about 400 workers in the summer months. The multitude of relief programs such as the CBJ Emergency Loan program and the Paycheck Protection Program played a large part in keeping wages from diving even further through the end of the year. While Retail’s Q4 shows signs of decent recovery, the lack of a substantial cruise season will likely leave retail in a rather large deficit compared to 2019. The Educational Services industry had a similar year, seeing employment down 30% in Q2 and Q3 but recovering to only an 8% difference compared to 2019. Administrative and Waste Services is a broad category but holds the majority of the travel arrangement operations, as well as support services for offices. Again, true losses and impact were muffled by the quick response by federal, city, and eventually state governments. The expected return of both working in the office and independent travel showed up at the end of 2020, pushing wages up 5% in Q4 compared to 2019.

JEDC Board Resolution 2021-11:
JEDC Position on Cruise Ship Petition Signing
JEDC opposes the three petitions attempting to limit cruise ship hours to 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, restrict cruise ships from porting on Saturday, and cap the size of cruise ships visiting Juneau to no greater than 100,000 GRT. JEDC acknowledges that there are important community conversations and work to be done regarding the nature and scope of tourism growth in Juneau. JEDC Board encourages the community to not sign these petitions. And let's continue to engage all stakeholders to make sure tourism works well for Juneau.
