Memorial Day is the traditional start of summer.  It's also a time when we honor those in service.  To all who have served in the past, and all who are serving now:  thank you for your time, your commitment and your service. Come and meet Chiron the service dog, who begins a new life of service right now, providing freedom of a different kind.  We honor both.
To serve and protect:
New Beginnings for Chiron the Service Dog
Once upon a time, there was a small, black-as-coal labrador retriever puppy named Chiron.  His name is from Greek mythology, meaning Good Healer. Last week, Chiron lived up to his name but it has been a journey that took a village to complete. I would like to share some of that journey with you!
Chiron was born on May 2, 2017 to Ebbie and Echo. (Thanks to Alice Long--Ebbie's mom, Jeff Moore--Echo's dad, and Country Companions Animal Hospital who delivered him!) When he was 8 weeks old, Chiron came to live with me to be raised as a service dog for his new best buddy, Tim. Chiron met Tim (at 5 months old) for the first time when Tim's parents offered to foster him for 6 weeks while I was having puppies at my house. (Thanks Wendy and Bill!)
While growing up and learning to be a service dog, Chiron went many places (Thanks St. Andrew's Church and Harrisburg Unitarian Church and Country Meadows!) and grew to be a healthy, big guy. (Thanks to his vet!)
Along the way, Chiron had to learn to go on elevators and up and down stairs which were both very challenging for him! ( Thanks Skelly & Loy, Memorial Eye, the Girl Scout council, and Boyer & Ritter for loaning us your elevators and stairs!)
Also, along the way, Chiron had to learn to work with people other than me! Thanks to his additional trainers--Marsha Dulaney, Linda Strauch, Paula Marinak, Victoria Lichtenwalner, Deb Fingerlow, Karen Johnston, Roseanne Foy, Cheryl Daily, and SOOO many others! (I am sure that I have missed many names that helped over the past 2 years!)
After a week of intensive training, on Friday, May 17, 2019, Chiron and Tim passed their formal access test and became the team of Tim and Redfern Canines Assistance Dog Chiron! Congratulations to both on a job well done! You will be missed in Harrisburg but will do a great job in Ohio!                                                 Betsy

A Cavalier Gets All Nosy

Hi Everyone!

I am SOOO excited about my new hobby that I just HAVE to tell you about it! It is really, really a lot of fun and very easy for me! All I need to do is SNIFF things out!

Sometimes we call it 'NoseWork' and sometimes we call it 'Scent Work' but I don't care what it is called--it is fun, fun, fun!

First of all, I get to spend time with my 'mom' Betsy and I get to play hide and seek with yummy treats. And now Betsy is putting something called 'oil of birch' with the yummy treats so that I can learn that when I find something that smells like birch I will get a yummy treat from her. Betsy tells me that we will get to play this game in lots of different places soon and that I can earn new titles and get more letters after my name. (But I don't care about the titles and letters--I just like to sniff!)

My sniffing friends tell me that it helps them be more self-confident and comfortable doing new things! And they love it as much as I do!

And now Betsy tells me that next weekend we will be going away overnight and I will get to play my game for 2 whole days with her. (I think she said it would be something called "continuing education" for her as part of her CNWI certification.)

Last night, Betsy and I played our game and she had my friend Cheryl take pictures so that I could show you how much fun it is. I found the little tin holder with the oil of birch in it really, really fast!

What Makes Redfern Training Different?

Some folks are hesitant to contact a professional training center, thinking the training will be cost-prohibitive.  Not true here at Redfern Canines.  Our class prices are competitive with the cost of classes offered in big box pet stores.  But there are some differences.  Read on to learn more.

Betsy Howell is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) and a Certified Nosework Instructor (CNWI).  Both designations are only achieved after extensive knowledge assessments.  Better still, both certifications require an additional 12 credits in continuing education annually to keep skills sharp.

Howell is also an AKC-licensed Scentwork Judge, a Canine Good Citizen Evaluator and a Tester/Observer for the Alliance of Therapy Dogs (therapydogs.org).

And there's more.  Each class begins with a unique Introduction to Training that sets the stage for excellent outcomes by getting everyone on the same page from the very beginning.
