Memorial Highway reconstruction update

During an informational open house on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at Midway Lanes, individuals had the opportunity to learn about project history, construction phasing, and special assessments. The Mandan Progress Organization also shared information about their proposed digital gift card program, designed for use along the Memorial Highway corridor at participating local businesses.

Work began in early April, and as construction progresses this spring, traffic is being shifted in phases to allow for underground construction and paving in both directions. Drivers will notice temporary lanes in place and traffic moving on both existing and newly built temporary roadways.

Throughout the project, one lane in each direction and a center turn lane will remain open to help keep vehicles moving. Please be aware that lane directions and locations will shift as crews continue to work on different sections of the roadway.

Please slow down in the work zone, pay attention to signage and crews, and continue supporting local businesses along “The Strip.”

Upcoming Work. Construction began with excavation for the storm water outlet infrastructure south of Memorial Highway. This includes the 19th Street closure and will be followed by the 21st Street closure and lift station construction at 40th Avenue. Construction activities on mainline Memorial Highway include removal of existing surfacing, roadway grading activities and construction of temporary surfacing.

Information regarding street closures and proposed detour routes will be available on the City of Mandan’s project website. Visit cityofmandan.com/mhp or scan the QR code below.

Volunteers to help keep Mandan litter free this month

Businesses, civic organizations, and youth groups are taking part in our community-wide litter clean-up throughout the month of May. The City of Mandan, in partnership with Keep North Dakota Clean, is providing supplies, route guidance and more. Volunteers participating in May will also have a chance to win prizes!

Now in its 12th year, this initiative focuses on cleaning up ditches along major routes in Mandan.

Additional information is available at cityofmandan.com/littercleanup.

Everyday Clean-Up Option. Residents are also encouraged to pick up litter while out walking. Please bag any trash and avoid sharp objects. Report large items such as animal carcasses or discarded tires to the Public Works Department at 701-667-3240 or publicworks@cityofmandan.com.

Mandan Union Cemetery Reminders

The City’s grounds maintenance staff works diligently to keep Mandan Union Cemetery looking nice, but would like to share some reminders for residents:

  • Floral items may be placed on graves no earlier than seven days prior to the following holidays: Independence Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and Memorial Day. Staff will dispose of remaining items within 14 days after the holiday.

  • Floral and commemorative items attached to headstones and placed in a way that allows for unobstructed mowing and trimming can be placed anytime, but will be removed when they become unsightly or faded.

  • Fresh flowers may be placed on gravesites at any time, but no wrapping, plastic or glass containers are allowed.

  • Ground level planting of annuals is permitted on the east side of headstones. The maximum planting area is the length of the headstone and no wider than 8 inches.
  • Borders or rocks are not permitted.

  • Planting of trees, shrubs or any permanent plantings is not permitted on gravesites.

Permanent plantings not allowed. Permanent plantings are not permitted on gravesites because memorials become compromised or damaged as plantings grow. Those who have planted trees or shrubs in the cemetery are asked to remove them. For removal questions, please contact the Grounds Maintenance Department at 701-667-3240 ext. 7.

Mandan Union Cemetery graciously accepts trees for donation, however the donated tree planting must be coordinated with staff to ensure proper placement. In addition, the Mandan Union Memorial Fund, created to accept donations in memory of loved ones, uses monetary donations for beautification and upkeep of the cemetery. To donate, please contact Jodi Jangula at 701-667-3240.
