Hello Friends,
We are almost there! The school season is wrapping up and the long days of summer are closer than ever! Summer has always been my favorite season filled with so many of my favorite things--lightning bugs, drippy popsicles and ice cream cones, cool pools on hot days, fireworks and camping and bare feet and gardens overflowing with flowers....yet as a mom, and more specifically a foster and adoptive mom, I recognize that the impending summer break is a bit trickier now.
For many of the kiddos who join our families through foster care, summer is not a time of anticipation, but rather a time where the unscheduled days and lack of structure lead to fear and uncertainty about what the future might hold. As caregivers, we get this beautiful opportunity to pause and think through ways to support our kiddos during the summer months. This intentional pause is a great way to set them, and the rest of our family, up for success!
Check out this podcast (and transcript) from The Forgotten Initiative for some simple strategies to set up your summer to be a time of fun and connection while supporting your kiddos and providing them with a routine for felt-safety and structure!
