For many years Sips Restaurant in Southwest Harbor has been a mainstay and gathering place for the MDI community. The Acadia Senior College community also enjoyed the hospitality of Jennifer Worcester and her crew as they graciously hosted our breakfast series called Coffee Clash during the winter months. While we are sad to see the restaurant close, we wish everyone all the best and thank you for the wonderful memories!

ASC Member Discussion Group
Federal Finance, Monetary Theory, and Moral Economics
A Winter 2022 ASC course in Modern Monetary Theory (MMT), led by Dave Dawson, has evolved into a political economy discussion group. Discussions will resume in June via ZOOM, most likely on Wednesday mornings at 10:00 a.m. EST. The group is now open to new members. To participate, you must be a current ASC member, but there is no charge for the discussion group itself.
Initial discussions were aimed at “de-mythologizing” fiat money, federal deficits, public debt, and the relation of taxation to federal spending, but moved on to broader issues like the operation of the federal reserve, money creation by banks, theories of inflation, the efficacy of federal reserve anti-inflation policies, constraints on international monetary policy and the utility (if any) of cryptocurrency.
Future topics will be chosen by participants and may include, for example, questions like, Why is healthcare so expensive? Why don’t we have a social democracy? Should we have a universal basic income? Why don’t we have full employment? What is Keynesian economics? Who was behind the “New Deal?” What are the economic effects of war? No background is required for participation.
For new members, we will schedule a few sessions introducing the basics of MMT and its implications for federal finance and social provision. Those interested in joining should contact Dave Dawson directly at dawsonda@ohsu.edu.

The Racial Justice page is now on the main menu.
