Another Hospice Savannah Wedding!

Our staff and volunteers have become quite adept at planning weddings with just a few days' notice! Here are newlyweds Mr. and Mrs. Tillman with our chaplain, Archie Seabrooks. They have been together for 32 years but somehow never got around to tying the knot. Our thanks to volunteer hairstylist Charles Ennis (see story below), volunteer photographer Les Wilkes, volunteer harpist Kristin King, and to volunteer Sarah Yates for flowers, outfits and a wedding cake!
Summer Nights party season kick-off

An easy and fun way to show your support of Hospice Savannah is to host a summertime party on our behalf. Our Foundation's Ophelia Rodriguez is here to help you every step of the way - with printed invitations and donation cards to mail on your behalf, party ideas, and a representative to stop by your event if requested. Curious about how it works? Read more at the Summer Nights page  on our site, call Ophelia at 912.629.1027  or attend a brief wine and cheese kick-off meeting for potential party hosts at Hospice House on Tuesday, May 23 at 5:30 p.m. Ophelia (R)  is pictured with volunteer and party host Betty Lewis.
Meet volunteer Charles Ennis

The overused but truthful aphorism "volunteers are the heart of hospice" exemplifies Hospice House and Homecare volunteer Charles Ennis, our nominee at last month's United Way Hands on Savannah Volunteer Awards Celebration.

Charles has visited countless patients throughout our five counties to cut and style their hair to simply make them feel better. He is pictured seated with partner Bernie to his right, and standing, left to right: homecare volunteer coordinator Christy Fulcher, Beth Logan, Jamey Espina, Debra Larson and Hospice House volunteer coordinator Kristi Hamrick. Read his full nomination here.
Hospice Savannah Thrift Shoppe is open in Pooler!

Woop Woop! Our upscale Thrift Shoppe is open for business! Located at 331 US Highway 80 East in Pooler's Fortune Plaza, we have lots of gently loved clothing, accessories, house wares and furniture.  To donate items, please stop by the store Tuesday through Saturday; drop off at our administrative offices on Chatham Parkway during the workweek; or at Hospice House by appointment. Call 629.1055 for details.

Mark your calendar for a grand ribbon cutting and celebration on Tuesday, June 6 at 10:30 a.m. when we will have special offers, raffles and refreshments all day. The Thrift Shoppe is our latest endeavor to increase unrestricted funding to support the many extra programs and services we offer our patients, families and community.
Five common misconceptions about palliative care

Our Steward Center for Palliative Care proudly partners with  St.Joseph's/Candler  to provide expert symptom management and care throughout the two hospitals and via an outpatient clinic. Take a moment to read a recent article explaining both how care is delivered and debunking five common myths.

Steward Center Director, Dr. Laura. Farless (pictured above during a clinic consultation) and her three Nurse Practitioners vigorously treat pain and other symptoms such as nausea, poor appetite, depression or anxiety, with a  goal of  keeping seriously ill patients as comfortable and as active as long as possible. Call 912.354.8014 to find out if palliative care may be an appropriate option for you or your loved one.
Art Show continues in Hospice Savannah Art Gallery

The vibrant floral paintings of Fran Thomas and the detailed watercolors and landscapes of Donna Bouchillon are featured in our Art Gallery through the end of June. We hope you will stop by to view their work. Donna is pictured in front of her watercolor of Temple Mickve Israel at last month's opening reception.

As always, a percentage of sales benefits Hospice Savannah. Please click here  to read a complete list of our generous donors and remembrances from last month.
The stress of caring for a loved one with dementia, disability or long-term illness

you take better care of your loved one,  and yourself!
Harley-Davidson Hospice House nurses!

Hospice House nurse Tricia Alderman is seated on her Harley trike with passenger and fellow nurse, Marcella. Tricia has been with us for 23 years. Some of her favorite patient stories include, " I had a patient whose family members had all died before him. He teared up and told me the saddest thing about dying was there would be no one left to remember him. I told him I would always remember him, and have been sharing his story ever since. Another sweet memory is of our staff singing and playing Adele with our pediatric patient. Her face would just light up! I am also so grateful for the special bond I developed with one of our residential patients. It left a lasting impression in my heart and helped me learn how to take care of my Mom."
