Beyond the Classroom Walls:
ELC Staff Member Making a Difference
Hello everyone, my name is Phyllis Roland, I am the teaching/classroom assistant in Pre-K 7. I have very recently accepted a position on the board of directors for DEAEYC, which is the Delaware affiliate of the National Association of the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). We are very passionate about accomplishing our goals, providing high quality early education to all children and families regardless of their social-economic status, support for early childhood educators in the areas of professional development /education, wage earning potential and more.

In April 2018, I had the privilege of attending my first Public Policy Forum in Washington, DC. After about 16-18 hours of lecture, study and collaboration, our team from Delaware and delegates from all over the US headed to Capitol Hill. There we met with our respective state legislators and their staff to discuss our needs and hear from them on ways we can partner with them to accomplish our goals.

Wednesday, May 9, 2018 is Early Childhood Education Advocacy Day. This is a day set aside once again to make an appeal to our state legislators to actively support early childhood education, children, families and professionals in the field. Groups of parents, early childhood educators, and children will travel to Dover, and meet at the state capitol building to demonstrate the benefits of what we provide and to further discuss collaboration with state officials. We invite you to join us by visiting the link provided . Here you will find ways you can help us by making your voice heard. We also would like to ask that you and your children join us in wearing yellow on May 9th as an act of solidarity.

Thank you very much.
Phyllis Roland
Your Voice Matters -
NAEYC Family Assessment
Hello ELC Families!

As you know, the ELC is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). With the accreditation, comes standards promoting high quality learning by connecting practice, policy and research. One of the many requirements set forth by the NAEYC is a yearly Family Assessment. This year we are using an online tool for families to complete the assessment in the hopes that it will ensure 100% participation! Should you not be able to complete the assessment online, you can stop by the front desk for a paper copy. The assessment is for Newark families only, and will be available next Wednesday, May 9th. We are asking that all assessments be completed and/or returned to the front desk by by Wednesday, May 16th. Thank you in advance for your participation!

Once your assessment is complete you will be in a drawing to receive a beautiful plant!

PD Day Follow Up
Our most recent Professional Development Day focused on Respectful and Culturally Responsive Family Engagement, Trauma Informed Care, and Sensory Disorders. Kelly Freel; Associate Director of Infants/Toddlers, led the morning session on Trauma Informed Care and supporting young children who witness intimate partner violence. The afternoon session was titled Sensory Disorders and was presented by the Delaware Institute for Excellence in Early Childhood. Staff are required to receive 18 hours of training each year.

Please mark your calendars for our next PD Day on Monday, June 4th.
