Macau: The New Las Vegas
Contributed
by Sean Doherty
The arrival of May usually doesn't mean spring flowers for the desert regions of the USA, but a flood of cash in the first weekend of May 2015 did keep the economy of Las Vegas from going dry. One of the economic rain falls was the release of the much-anticipated Avengers: Age of Ultron movie to a very warm box office response. Even more beneficial to Las Vegas was the mega-event of Mayweather vs. Pacquiao boxing showdown. This multi-hundred million dollar match drew predictions that May 1-3 would be the biggest economic weekend in the city's history. Yet what "happened in Vegas" during those three days is still just "business as usual" by Macau standards. By comparison, annual gaming revenues in Las Vegas stack up to only fifteen percent of what the gambling industry in Macau now enjoys. So while visitors to Vegas were enjoying slots, boxing matches, shows, and action movies, the May Day holiday in China (equivalent to the US Labor Day) brought a surge of ready-to-gamble and looking-to-shop tourists to the island Macau. Always ready to exercise my writing muscles in pursuit of an interesting business story, I took a flight from Nanjing to Shenzhen, and then jumped on the ferry to Macau so I could witness tourist activity through the lens of comparison to Las Vegas. One of the first observations I made while driving along "The Strip" in Macau is how much construction is still underway. I counted six new hotels at various stages of being raised from the ground, with at least three slated for completion this year. Considering the success story of the Sands Macao casino hotel, which opened in 2004 and, according to the New Yorker, recouped its $265 million construction cost within a year, these new hotels will achieve profitability very quickly. The hotels and casinos that are already finished-and there are several-are impressive in every sense of the word: size, design, scope, and yes, quite excessive. Where Vegas still has the edge on Macau is the business transacted outside of the casinos, particularly entertainment, dining, and family activities. But a coordinated effort by developers, businesses, and entertainment companies, led by policies and encouragement by the Macau government, may change all that soon. I was fortunate to join sold-out crowds for three different performances of tremendous talent: Katy Perry for a two-night show during her Prismatic World Tour; an acrobatic performance called The House of Dancing Water; and a live screening of the boxing super-fight held at 9:00am Sunday morning, to coincide with the live event in the MGM Las Vegas. The concert and the boxing screening took place in one of the world's largest buildings, The Venetian Macau, which also houses the world's largest casino (550,000 square feet). I'm not a gambler, but it was easy to see that the game floors were packed around the clock, with people meeting, and exceeding the average minimum bets of $270 (the average in Vegas is $20) without blinking an eye.
While gambling in China is only legal in Macau, the remainder of China is experiencing the loosening of regulations for other risky bets: trading stocks. Recent development's in the country'stightly controlled capital markets allows Hong Kong and Shanghai investors to trade shares on each other's bourses. The Stock Connect scheme or "Through Train" as it has come to be called, gives foreign and Chinese retail investors unprecedented access to both exchanges. Analysts are predicting that the connection could develop into the world's third largest stock exchange. In conclusion, what I saw on my Macau trip, combined with the frequent reports I'm seeing of the Stock Connect scheme, tells me that China's economy will continue to push full-speed ahead. There are still a great many ways for people to make money in this part of the world, whether it's gambling at the casino tables, or across the trading desk of the stock market. -Sean Doherty is a Colorado native and graduate of Metropolitan State University, living and working in the Shanghai to Nanjing area of China. Sean represents the Denver South Economic Development Partnership as the Greater China Exchange Coordinator, focused on fostering the exchange of ideas, strategies, and talent between China and the metro-Denver area.
