Words From Manet Patients

"My provider is really professional and listens carefully as well as takes time to go over notes from past providers to get a better sense of my medical history and how to help me." - Manet Patient

"The care I receive is always very important to me, and whenever I have an appointment, I'm able to address my concerns and always get an explanation on what is happening and how to address the problem. I always feel respected by the staff and feel like they truly care. I'm very grateful to have a community health center like Manet." - Manet Patient

Women's Health Tips

Cervical Cancer Screening: Pap smears are essential for cervical cancer screening. Current guidelines recommend screening every 3 years for women aged 21–29, and every 5 years for women aged 30–65.

To make an appointment with Samantha at Manet's North Quincy site, call (617) 376-3000.

Exercise: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise weekly - walking, swimming, or yoga are great options. Movement improves mood, heart health, and bone density.

As the weather gets warmer, many communities have free yoga access. Check out:

Calcium intake: It's important to incorporate calcium into the diet because your body needs it to build and maintain strong bones. Sources of calcium include

  • milk
  • yogurt
  • soybeans
  • tofu
  • canned sardines
  • salmon with edible bones
  • cheese
  • fortified cereals
  • orange juice
  • supplements

Manet is here to support patients who may be facing challenges accessing nutritious food. Contact a Manet site today to meet with a member of our team.

Chronic Disease and Depression: Mental Health Resources

Behavioral health is vital to our overall well-being, and understanding the connection between chronic disease and depression is especially important. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), individuals living with chronic disease (a condition that lasts at least a year and requires ongoing medical attention or limits activities or daily living or both) are at an increased risk of developing depression. This can be due to stress, changes in the brain, or side effects of medications. When depression and chronic illness occur together, symptoms of both can become more severe.

Depression can also increase the risk of developing certain chronic conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, stroke, chronic pain, osteoporosis, and Alzheimer’s disease.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, watch for these common signs of depression. Not everyone with depression experiences all symptoms. These symptoms can significantly interfere with daily life and well-being.
