WE'LL MAKE IT HOME TOGETHER™
May 2026
| | |
From May 23–June 7, MHO is proud to join nearly 250 NeighborWorks network organizations nationwide in celebrating NeighborWorks Weeks! This year's theme, "Celebrating Community Together," is a reminder of what's possible when we invest in people, housing, and the places we call home. As one of only four organizations in North Carolina, MHO received a NeighborWorks America membership charter in 2008. Since then, we have been part of a network committed to creating opportunities for community members to live in affordable homes, improve their lives, and strengthen their communities.
Access to stable, affordable housing is the foundation of strong communities, and the numbers prove it. Last year, in North Carolina alone, NeighborWorks network partners invested $258 million across four organizations, leveraging an extraordinary $138 for every $1 invested. We're also thrilled to share that MHO was recently awarded a $314,000 NeighborWorks Flexible Impact Grant, part of $78.8 million awarded to 245 organizations nationwide. These funds support expanding homeownership opportunities, increasing housing supply, and strengthening our local economy.
Follow along on social media this week to see how MHO is creating opportunities, strengthening our community, and expanding access to quality, affordable homes for all. We're proud to be part of this network, and even prouder to serve this community in western North Carolina!

You're invited to celebrate a special addition to Asheville's Black Cultural Heritage Trail! On Friday, June 5, 2026 from 1:30–3:00 PM, MHO and Explore Asheville are hosting the dedication of "Black Boy Joy," a vibrant new mural by local artist Tommy Lee McGee, located at MHO's Glen Rock Apartments at 372 Depot Street. This event is part of NeighborWorks Weeks 2026, bringing this year's theme, "Celebrating Community Together," to life!
"Black Boy Joy" is a vibrant reflection of the people, stories, and spirit that make our community home; a lasting work of art that honors the connections we build and the neighborhoods we share. The afternoon will begin with ice cream from Sunshine Sammies at 1:30 PM, followed by a program at 2:00 PM featuring remarks from Vic Isley, President and CEO of Explore Asheville; artist Tommy Lee McGee; Geoffrey Barton, President and CEO of MHO; and Bryan Brown, SVP of National Initiatives at NeighborWorks America. Networking and refreshments will follow from 2:30–3:00 PM.
No RSVP is required. Simply show up! Parking is available across from 408 Depot Street. We hope to see you there for this meaningful celebration of art, community, and Asheville's rich cultural heritage.
| MHO is excited to announce a $35,000 General Operating Grant from Women for Women, announced during WFW's 20th Anniversary Celebration on May 7 at Highland Brewing. Leveraging the power of collective giving, Women for Women makes high-impact grants to improve the lives of women and girls in our region. Since 2006, Women for Women has given more than $5.75 million to 75 nonprofits that help women and girls in the 18 counties of western NC. Thank you to the members of Women for Women for supporting MHO! | MHO recently participated in two important advocacy events, bringing the voices of our community to both federal and state lawmakers. On April 22nd, President & CEO Geoffrey Barton traveled to Washington, D.C. for the National NeighborWorks Association Legislative Advocacy Day, where he met with representatives from Senator Tillis' and Senator Budd’s offices, and with Representative Edwards to discuss the urgent need for affordable homeownership investment across WNC. Just one week later, on April 29th, MHO staff members Adeline Wolfe, Angi Welch, Justin Tuttle, Lukas Ray, Tara Irby, and Todd Puhl joined housing advocates from across the state in Raleigh for NC Housing Day, meeting with NC Senator Julie Mayfield and Representatives Lindsey Prather, Eric Ager, and Brian Turner to champion increased state investment in affordable housing, preservation of existing housing stock, and expanded homeownership opportunities for all North Carolinians. These efforts reflect MHO's ongoing commitment to advancing policies that create stable, resilient communities and to ensuring that the people we serve are represented in these decisions. | Save the date for MHO’s annual fundraising event, BUILDING HOPE, returning to Highland Brewing Company on Thursday, October 15, 2026!
