GVC volunteers having a good time at our Earth Day tree planting
|
|
Show your support for healthy lands, healthy waters, and healthy communities in the Gunpowder watershed! You're invited to our GVC Celebration at Pine Ridge Golf Course on Sunday, October 3rd from 3 pm - 6 pm. Join us as we celebrate our volunteers and showcase our environmental stewardship projects. Volunteers are the heart of the Gunpowder Valley Conservancy (GVC) and we are excited to honor their hard work.
Have you been trying to attend one of our workshops, but your schedule never cooperates?! This will be a great opportunity to learn all about the GVC in a casual setting. Located on the shores of Loch Raven Reservoir, Pine Ridge Golf Course is the ideal location to view our most recent habitat restoration work. Guests will be able to tour native tree plantings and Clear Creeks Project conservation gardens, as well as participate in nature walks and golf challenges.
The GVC Celebration at Pine Ridge Golf Course will include drinks, snacks, and raffles. It is open to all GVC friends, members, and supporters. Admission is FREE and an online registration page will be launched in June. Stay tuned for more details in our June e-newsletter. We look forward to seeing you on October 3rd!

GVC Donor Gives Back to the Community
|
|
Who doesn't love being presented with an oversized check?! We were thrilled to learn that GVC was the recipient of a #TomsGivingFriday donation in honor of Earth Day. We recently chatted with Thomas Spray-Fry, a certified financial planner with Heritage Financial Consultants in Hunt Valley, MD, on what motivates his weekly charity donations.
Beginning this year, Thomas has made a donation to a different charity each week. His motivation? Social media. He was discouraged by how many posts were all talk and no action. Thomas decided to lead by example! He chose GVC because it was a local, environmental group that makes a difference by planting trees and cleaning streams.
Thomas' appreciation of nature began at an early age while growing up on the Eastern Shore. He especially loves the serenity of Baltimore County and how "when you cross over the Loch Raven Reservoir you feel anxiety going down and you're surrounded by beautiful mature trees." He appreciates the hiking trails along the Gunpowder Falls, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Many thanks to Thomas for his appreciation of the beauty of the Gunpowder watershed.

Get Involved - GVC Calendar of Events
|
|
We are always adding new volunteer opportunities so make sure you visit our online calendar of events for the most current schedule!
We're excited to announce a couple events perfect for homeowners! Our next rain barrel workshop, with curbside pick-up option, will be June 12th at Faith Lutheran Church in Cockeysville. We also have several openings for our FREE Conservation Garden Design workshop, where homeowners can learn necessary skills to create their own Bayscape or rain garden.
The GVC highly values the safety of our staff and volunteers. All participants must wear a face mask at all times and maintain social distancing. Should you feel ill, please do not attend the event and let the event leader know as soon as possible so we can recruit additional volunteers.

Earth Day and the Environment for Kids!
|
We don't have to tell you that Earth Day is Everyday! One of the fun outcomes of our Baltimore Earth Day campaign was being able to sponsor the Earth Day edition of WTMD's Saturday Morning Tunes. Make sure to share the video with the young environmentalists in your life! It features fun music videos and Baltimore area students discussing topics like composting and the importance of trees.

The GVC family lost a dear member, Al Peabody, earlier this month. Al created and managed the original Clear Creeks Project website from 2013-2016. A talented photographer, Al was our official photographer for several GVC annual fundraisers. He was the charming "other half" of our longtime Tree Maintenance Coordinator, Kim Peabody.
He will be remembered as a creative, kind, and brilliant man. A great conversationalist, it was always a joy to sit and chat with Al at GVC functions.
