After a 3-year wait, the Friends of Jacob Edwards Library are very excited to be holding a book sale!

Proceeds from the book sale benefit programs supported by the Friends - museum passes, children’s room programs, receptions and adult programs, library equipment, and more!

A large variety of items will be available: fiction and non-fiction books, CD’s, and DVD’s. All books have been sorted by category, and the mysteries are sorted by author. Children’s books are free!

Canvas totes sell for $5, which you can then fill with as many books as will fit!

The Board of Trustees has a vacancy!

The Library Trustees are responsible for the administration of special trust funds set up for the betterment of the library. In addition, the Trustees review library policy, and works with the Library Director to improve and promote the library in the community. The Trustees meet monthly, on the 4^th Tuesday of the month at 12 pm.

The Trustees would like to recruit an active library patron for this opening. Please submit a letter of interest to Robin Weber, Chair or complete the application available at the library. Letters of interest can be left at the library, or emailed to [email protected]. In your letter of interest please include your contact information, experience as a library patron, why you are interested in serving, and your areas of interest (youth, adult services, outreach and access or technology). The Trustees will review all applications received through May 15^th, 2022.

This collection features a variety of materials ranging from semi precious stone and Czech glass to lacquered paper beads and decoupage pendants. Some of the pieces are an homage to favorite women writers and poets.

Since 2021, Emily Daly has been the artist behind her small business, E.V.D.'s Whimsies. However, arts and crafts have always been an important part of her life, largely because she was given many opportunities to explore them by her artist mother. Additionally, Emily was able to hone her interests and skills in a four year apprenticeship at the Worcester Center for Crafts and as a jewelry repairer and designer at the former Tatnuck Bead Store in Worcester. Over the years, she has developed a unique style that incorporates elements of her background as a professor of composition and literature with her interest in color, design, and fashion. Because Emily has always loved the beauty of language, it felt natural to have her work featured at Jacob Edwards Library. For this series Emily used a variety of materials, including semi precious stones, Czech glass, and lacquered paper beads made from the pages of old, damaged books.

Women in Early Country Music

The Jacob Edwards Library is pleased to host a concert by Berkshire-based roots musician Paula Bradley (vocals, guitar, banjo). Paula brings stories and songs of women in early country music, highlighting their often-overlooked contributions to America's rich musical legacy to her performances.

A West Virginia-born multi-instrumentalist residing in the Berkshires, Paula Bradley has been involved in old-time and roots music for many years. Known for her strong, spirited vocals, she has toured (on banjo) with old-time darlings "Uncle Earl"; with old-time powerhouse Bruce Molsky (on guitar and banjo uke); and recorded and toured with Tony Trischka and Bruce as part of the acoustic roots trio "Jawbone". She was also a founding member of the popular New England honkytonk combo (on piano and vocals) "Girl Howdy,” and with her late husband, Bill Dillof, “Moonshine Holler.” Currently, she leads her own popular honky tonk/country swing combo “Miss Paula & The Twangbusters" and pursues many musical side projects. Paula is also an on-demand traditional music instructor and has been on staff at music camps including Swannanoa Gathering, Mars Hill, Winter Village Music, Augusta and Ashokan.

Tips from the Past for Modern Gardeners

The kitchen garden played a vital role in the diet and landscape of 1800s New England households. This PowerPoint-illustrated lecture explores traditional garden plans and cultivation practices featuring the historic vegetables, fruits, and herbs favored by our ancestors. Christie Higginbottom will highlight garden practices valuable for today’s family kitchen garden such as inter-planting and succession planting, using garden frames, and creating homemade tools.

Christie Higginbottom is a researcher and garden consultant who has worked at Old Sturbridge Village since 1981. She coordinated the historic horticulture program researching, planning and planting the re-created kitchen and flower gardens at the museum’s historic households. She also supervised the Village’s Herb Garden collection exhibiting over 300 varieties of historic herbs. As research historian for horticulture and landscape, she developed a series of self-guided walking trails interpreting people and the environment in the early 1800s. Now retired from full-time work at OSV, she continues to work in costume part-time – most often in the gardens, and to present garden programs for the Village.

Christie writes and consults on historic gardens, heirloom plants, and herb use; and she lectures at museums, garden clubs, historical societies, colleges and libraries. She teaches home gardening classes at the Adult Education program at Bay Path Regional Vocational High School, Tower Hill Botanic Garden, and the Northeast Organic Farmers Association.
