Keeping Up with Christiana!

Welcome to our May Newsletter! This month, we recognize National Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month was first celebrated in the United States in the late 1970s to honor the culture and history of
Asian American and Pacific Islander
communities in the United States.
Here in Howard County, I hope you join us in celebrating AAPI Heritage Month this Sunday, May 19th, at Centennial Park from 2pm - 6pm! The celebration is being hosted by several community organizations and will include cultural performances, ethnic foods, and outdoor games (more details below).

Council Legislative Updates
|
The County Council voted on its April legislation on Monday, May 6.
I was proud to pass several bills this month with my colleagues on the County Council, including legislation expanding access to diaper-changing stations in Howard County (CB14-2019) and approval of the DRRA for High School #13, ensuring that Howard County's next high school will be built in District 3 (CR49-2019).

May Legislation: Stop-Arm Cameras on School Buses!
|
This month, I was happy to join County Executive Ball in introducing legislation to authorize stop-arm cameras on all Howard County school buses (CB18-2019).
These cameras are meant to catch drivers who pass buses as they stop to pick up children, putting our students at risk.
Children deserve safe access and transportation to their schools. When it comes to bus safety, Howard County should work to deter and penalize those who put our kids in harm’s way.

|
Additional May Legislation
|
Additional May legislation includes:
- CB20-2019: legislation extending the 2018 Tiber/Plumtree Watershed Safety Act by 3 months to provide the County Council adequate time to review the report on CB56-2018. Introduced by Liz Walsh. Cosponsored by Christiana Mercer Rigby, Opel Jones, Deb Jung, and County Executive Ball.

I had a blast at the
HoCo Professional Fire Fighters Association
"FireOps 101" last month! We spent the day brushing up on CPR, fighting fires, and learning from some of the incredible firefighters & first responders that keep our county safe every day.
Don't let the pictures fool you - it's a lot harder than it looks! I have immense respect and appreciation for the firefighters that are taking risks every day to keep us safe.
