Digital Delivery: The Future is Now

These three sessions will provide background on how to support our clients' current and future needs by utilizing digital delivery to improve workflow and efficiency of final deliverables

Connected Structural Modeling in Revit

(1 PDH NJ, NY & PA)

Gary Fay,

BIM Coordinator, Simpson Gumpertz and Hager

In this presentation, I will show you how to use Revit to create and model structural elements, such as reinforced concrete or steel connections and with the use of common parameters in Revit and Dynamo scripts, I will demonstrate how all the views and schedules are maintained from a single source of truth. Any change from that single source of truth will update all the other views that show the same information, such as plans, sections, elevations, schedules, and 3D views. This can be done in any of the views that show the information and will eventually be sourced externally from design information.

GIS – A Platform to Support AEC & Local Government

(1 PDH NJ, NY & PA)

David Kunz,

GISP - Vice President of Geospatial Services, ARH Associates

This presentation demonstrates the use of GIS technology within the AEC community. GIS technology is being utilized as by our community as a tool for documenting activities in the field to support construction management, site specific conditions, and integration with other design platforms. GIS is also supporting organizations for the management of assets as part of comprehensive asset management system or individual stand-alone uses. This presentation will highlight these uses and discuss the available technologies.

Legislative Update

NJ Legislature moving ahead with OPRA bill.

Long-awaited amendments to a controversial bill to change the Open Public Records Act were released earlier this week. Assemblymember Joe Danielsen, a Democrat who’s the top sponsor of the bill in the lower house, said he believes the amendments address most of the concerns from advocates, who turned out in force during March legislative hearings and helped stall the bill’s passage, apart from the New Jersey Press Association and some attorneys.

The most controversial part of the law, involving attorney’s fees for people who successfully challenge a records request denial, remains in place but with some changes, Danielsen said.

Background: Backers of the bill, NJ S2930, have said the 2002 public records law needs updates to deal with new technologies and to combat commercial requests that officials say have overwhelmed some municipal records custodians.

But many public advocacy groups, unions, attorneys, press organizations and others said the legislation would “gut” access to public records.

The most controversial part of the OPRA overhaul bill would eliminate the requirement that governments pay a requestor's legal fees if a judge, or the Government Records Council, rules a government denied their records request, instead leaving it up to a judge’s discretion. That, advocates said, would have a chilling effect on government transparency by disincentivizing attorneys from taking on challenges to public records denials, and making attorneys less likely to take on cases that could set a precedent by clarifying what is and is not a public record.

Danielsen said that the amendments would still leave it up to a judge whether to award legal fees to those who successfully appeal request denials, but that it would be a “hybrid system” in which the judge is required to award the fees if he finds that the records request denial was made in “bad faith.”

The Bill is being considering in both the House and the Senate late this week.
