NEWS & UPDATES
A Door is Opening!
The provincial government very recently announced that summer camps are likely to open – both overnight and day camps!! There are restrictions and our Summer Camp and Healthcare Teams are on top of these.

Incoming campers will experience cohorting, masking, regular handwashing, and distancing – all so commonplace now that we are more than a year into the pandemic.

But they will also experience swimming, canoeing, sailing, games, music, rock climbing, high ropes, nature hikes, exploration of the night sky, great food, new friendships, plus the ability to run and just be kids. There will be silly jokes, good stories, sound sleeps, and an experience they will remember for the rest of their lives.

We can’t wait…
and from what we hear, neither can the kids.
With all of our mighty hopes,
SUMMER CAMP 2021 here we come!!
Monarch Ultra Run
In our March newsletter we introduced you to the Ultra Monarch Relay. This event challenges participants to run in relay a prescribed route beginning in Peterborough and ending in Barrie. It’s a challenge, but a challenge with an important purpose. The idea is to give participants and supporters a sense of the distances that Monarchs fly each year to and from their over-wintering grounds in Mexico. This is an exciting event for ultra-runners!

This year, to involve those of us who are not ultra-runners, the organizers have introduced a 10K option. We can all celebrate the monarch migration by walking, running or even biking 10kms!

The goal of the 10K event is to engage at least 430 participants and reach the goal of 4,300 kms – this distance total matches the distance that a monarch flies during their spring migration from Mexico back to Canada. That is an extraordinary migration!

Each participant will be asked to raise funds. Donations raised through the Virtual 10km will support Camp Kawartha and raise our profile as an organization offering nature experiences and education programs for children and youth. Getting our bodies moving for a cause, conservation action and community spirit are the goals of the Monarch Ultra Virtual 10km!

C.S.E.T. BOYS HAVING TIME OF THEIR LIVES
Something Doing Every Minute at Rotary Camp
According to Walter Smaill, who returned from the Rotary Camp at Clear Lake yesterday. The C.S.E.T. boys there are having the time of their lives. Mr. Smaill opened the camp last Wednesday, and there has been something doing every minute of the time since. There are only 18 boys at the camp and there is room for as many more, and the P.A.A.A. director of athletics is hoping that 20 or 30 boys will go up and enjoy a holiday this week at the low cost of five dollars. Next Monday the C.S.E.T. boys turn the camp over to the Holy Name Society, who are anticipating a large attendance.
Five dollars for a week of camp, and no starched collars – seems reasonable!

Indigenous Ways of Knowing...
Camp Kawartha is delighted to be able to work with TRACKS (TRent Aboriginal Cultural Knowledge and Science) Program to create a space where campers and students can learn about Indigenous ways of knowing and strengthen their connection to the land.
TRACKS is an educational program based at Trent University which provides hands-on experiences for youth interested in the intersections of Western and Indigenous sciences. TRACKS builds community by encouraging youth of all backgrounds to engage with each other and the environment in a way which honors Indigenous knowledges and relations with the environment.
Thanks to a grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Peterborough, we will be erecting a Tipi next to the Camp Kawartha Environment Centre. This partnership and project will be carried out under the guidance of the First Peoples House of Learning (FPHL) at the University. Along with the regular programming that both Camp Kawartha and TRACKS offer, this project would also include a gathering for Indigenous high school aged youth.
Camp Kawartha Day
Douro-Dummer Township Council has done us the honour of declaring Sunday, July 4th, 2021 as CAMP KAWARTHA DAY in recognition of our 100th Birthday! We are very gratified that the Township has made such a declaration.

HEALTH CENTRE
Health Centre Gets Decked Out
To ensure that the Health Centre is accessible, a ramp and deck are being added as we write! This is another accessibility project to add to all the others that have been installed around the Camp in the last few years.

We have accessible washrooms and showers, an accessible pathway to the waterfront, a Hoyer Lift to move wheelchair campers into canoes and kayaks, a beach chair to get them safely into the water for a dip, a trail chair so they can access the trail system, an accessible climbing wall – the only one in the region – and some accessible cabins.

The Centre’s ramp and deck build on our commitment to being inclusive.

The exterior plastering of the Centre is next. A mixture of clay, lime, sand and chopped straw will be applied with trowels. Over time this mixture turns to ‘stone’ when exposed to the air and replaces regular plaster which can crack. This plaster has longevity, beauty, and low carbon emissions!

If you are interested in supporting our new Health Centre, we would welcome your contribution!
ENVIRONMENT CENTRE
Environment Centre Day Camp Registration is Open for 2021
Join the waitlist... and our Registrar, James, will be in touch shortly to confirm spaces.

We are very excited and hopeful to be able to go ahead with our popular nature-based, experiential & outdoor learning camps at the Environment Centre again this summer!

Programming will be adapted of course due to Covid-19 restrictions and safety precautions, but the same great underlying principles apply... being out in nature, with friends & inspiring leaders to learn, enjoy and be a part of taking care of the Earth.

Please don't hesitate to be in touch if you have questions. info@campkawartha.ca
Raising Silk Moths at the Environment Centre
They are big and beautiful but not often seen. From Cecropia to Polyphemus, silk moths have large colourful wings, stout bodies and theirs wings extend to the either side of their bodies as opposed to a butterfly whose wings are upright while resting. If you see one, don’t worry – they can’t bite because they have no functioning mouth parts.
A Cecropia and Luna Moth raised by Camp Kawartha
The males have large hairy antennae to catch the scent of a female. She emits pheromones that the male can detect several kilometers away. Because of habitat loss and pesticides, there are fewer of these magnificent creatures and Camp Kawartha wants to help. The “Moth Man”, Tim Dyson, was able to supply Camp Kawartha with cocoons. And if you want to raise silk moths he can provide cocoons for you as well.

NATURE NOTES
Animal Showcase: Invasive Species - Zebra Mussels
A walk down to the newly installed docks revealed beautifully clear water. That’s typical for spring. I could easily see the bottom, but on that bottom was evidence an ongoing problem – an invasive species commonly known as the Zebra Mussel. They were everywhere!

Zebra mussels are not native to Canadian waterways. They were first discovered in the 1980s in the Great Lakes and like their first arrival, they move between waterbodies in ballast or on the hulls of boats. Governments have spent billions trying to control and eradicate them, but according to our lakebed, to no effect.
