President's Message

Dear Friends,

I am so looking forward to seeing all of you at our May 15th luncheon at Dunwoody Country Club. So much happens at this very special meeting! It is truly a crowning celebration of all DWC has accomplished this past year.

On this day we welcome and award our scholarship winners and their families! Thank you so much to Beverly Clark, Scholarship Chair, and her Scholarship Committee (Mary Jane Hollander, Kay Moe, Barbara Kepner, and Dottie D’Angelo) for their many hours spent reviewing applications and choosing the winners.

Also on display will be all the District and State awards won by DWC this past year. GFWC Georgia First VP Peggy Wilson and Ella F. White/Lipscomb Chair Amy Atkinson will attend and bring greetings from the State. As HOBY Representative, Amy will collect the individually wrapped snack items you bring and deliver them to the HOBY conference. DWC sponsors three students to attend this valuable youth leadership event. Many thanks to Rita Lynch and Maria Barnhart for all their work.

Finally, at this luncheon, you may pick up your Yearbook and Handy Dandy Phonebook ($3 each or 2 for $5). You may also purchase (they go quickly) one of the beautiful spring centerpieces created by our very talented ladies on the Decorations Committee.

What a fitting way to salute DWC! Each of you has made it possible for us to make a real difference in our community. Now come and revel in all you have accomplished!

 Anna Maria Jarvis

Founder of Mother’s Day in the USA

By some accounts, there are an estimated 2 billion mothers around the world right now, and Mother’s Day is celebrated these days in more than 100 countries, usually in May. Most Arab countries, however, celebrate Mother’s Day on March 21. And in Indonesia, mothers are honored nationally on December 22.

Festivals celebrating mothers date way back to ancient times. The Phrygians, for example, held a festival for Cybele, the Great Mother of the Gods. The Greeks revered Rhea, and the Romans added moms to their own pantheon.

While all moms probably should be beatified (well, maybe not Ma Barker or Catherine de Medici), it took the rearing of an unruly child for one single mom of three to be made a saint. Today, we know that determined mom as Saint Monica, Patron Saint of Mothers, Wives, and Widows. We now also know her “difficult child” as the revered theologian, Saint Augustine of Hippo. Nearly 1,800 years after surmounting family turmoil, Monica was canonized by Pope Benedict XIV on May 26, 1807.

So, never doubt the power of a mother’s advice to her children or the consequences. Anna Maria Jarvis, founder of Mother’s Day here in the United States, was born on May 1, 1864 in West Virginia. Anna’s mom was a social activist and active in her church, often giving Sunday school lessons. It is alleged that Anna “found her inspiration for Mother’s Day” as her mom once closed a lesson with a prayer: “I hope and pray that someone, sometime, will found a memorial mothers day commemorating her for the matchless service she renders to humanity in every field of life. She is entitled to it.”

While Anna studied and worked afield as young woman, she took her mom in when her health declined, spending most of her time caring for her mother until her death in 1905. Three years later, on May 10, 1908, Anna held a “memorial ceremony to honor her mother and all mothers at the International Mother’s Day Shrine, in Grafton, West Virginia, marking the first official observance of Mother’s Day.”

Anna would come to rail about the subsequent commercialization of Mother’s Day and even sought to rescind it, but the commercial forces could not be stopped. Her efforts were halted when, sadly, Anna was placed in a sanitarium in Pennsylvania where she died on November 24, 1948. Ironically, folks “connected with the floral and greeting card industries (had) paid the bills to keep her” there.

When you send a card or flowers to the mother or woman you love, remember they are so much more than words can express. They are love.
