Local Spotlight - Sugo

Wow! I had the greatest opportunity to test out the newest Italian restaurant in town, SUGO. I had to try every course...started with Tomato Bruscetta with a garlic olive oil and chopped tomato medley. Next up was the Fried Calamari as an appetizer and Caesar side salad. Ok, I was full, but carried on. Main dishes tried were the Pasta Balsamica with Grilled Chicken and Grilled Pork with Polenta. To round out our meal, we tried the Pistachio Cannoli Cake. I rolled out of there very impressed and satisfied. Christian Williams, owner of SUGO, made everyone feel special and welcome. He was all hands on deck and made sure everything was going to plan. Like anything new, especially in the restaurant business, you need to have a little patience while staff comes up to speed and adjusts to the pace. We didn't have to wait long for anything. Everything had a lot of great flavors and you could tell it was all fresh. I think the only thing pre-made was the sauces, but that only gets better as it marinates, right? Please check them out for yourselvse. It was such a treat and the pricing is very comparable to other restaurants in downtown Tuscaloosa. They also have gift cards available...watch for our contest and a chance to win dinner at SUGO. Cheers!

THIS MONTH'S RECIPE
Grilled Shrimp Skewers
It's the time of year to fire up the grill! Here is one of our favorite grilled recipes from The Pioneer Woman:

Ingredients:
  • 2 1/2 lb extra large shrimp
  • zest & juice of 1 lemon
  • 3 garlic cloves, peeled & chopped
  • 1/4 c olive oil
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • sea salt, chopped parsley, & lemon wedges, for serving
Directions:

  1. Peel the shells and tails from the shrimp and cut out the vein (if you like).
  2. Combine the lemon juice, garlic, olive oil, salt, black pepper and crushed red pepper in a large bowl. Add the cleaned shrimp and toss well to coat. Cover and refrigerate for 15 minutes.
  3. If using wooden skewers, place 12 skewers (about 12 inches long) in a 9-inch by 13-inch dish filled with water. Preheat a grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. Oil the grill grates well.
  4. Remove the shrimp from the marinade and thread 4 or 5 pieces on each skewer. Place the skewers in the grill pan or on the grill over direct heat. Cook until the shrimp is bright pink all over and opaque, about 2 to 3 minutes per side. Remove from the heat. Garnish with sea salt, parsley, and lemon wedges and serve immediately.
