SOWER Ministry Newsletter May 2019
Friends, does it seem like May has had a bit of an identity crisis? Late season snow "events" are plaguing many parts of the country, and where it's not snowing, it's raining! So many of us are feeling like we might have returned to our homes in the north just a bit too early this year! But even with the crazy weather going on, May still fills up pretty fast. There are graduations to go to, weddings to celebrate, and maybe even a sweet new grandbaby to cuddle. We’re doing spring in Texas this year, and the wildflowers have been amazing! I hope spring is in full throttle in your neck of the woods too. Things are also picking up speed at the SOWER office! We’re happy to report that following the electrical strike last month, the renovations are complete and the new printer has arrived! The June/July Sowergram is already being printed, and it's chock full of information. Not only does it include the PLS (don’t forget that ALL winter projects are now on a first-come, first-served basis), GL reports and other articles, it also includes the resumes of the five members who have been nominated for the Board of Trustees, and the ballot for voting. If you're a "Web Only" member and don't receive the hard copy of the 'Gram, don't worry - your ballot will be mailed to you. Don't forget to get your ballot into the office by July 1st.
Before the summer schedule kicks in, take a look at all of the available summer projects. There is nothing like serving at one of our camp projects when it's in full swing! Check 'em out, and sign up! I know you'll be blessed.

May He get all the Praise and Glory!

Are you looking for a place to serve where you can participate and watch young lives transformed by the Word of God and where children commit their lives to the Lord?
Are you looking for a place removed from the busyness of life, nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, with acres of green grass, trails to waterfalls, horseback riding, archery, pool swimming, and feeling like everyday you awake to God’s beautiful creation? Do you love to rub elbows with kids during chapel, while eating, playing games, or at a bonfire? Do you get excited when you see someone walk the aisle to give their lives to the Lord? Then make HTBC a place of service during one of your summers. They generally service 1,200 children each summer from SC, GA and NC. Stephen Brackeen (with his family) wants SOWERs to know that whenever they come, you are welcome to participate in the activities of the camp to the fullest, even participation in the spiritual activities with the kids. Currently the project this summer is reconstructing the dining hall. A very wet winter put us behind, but God willing, we would like to be open for business by 2nd week of June. Pray and come! (Harvest Time asks for 3 SOWER couples each month from April through October and there are still plenty of openings!)

Harvest Time Bible Camp NC-522 is located in the foothills of the South Mountain Range, 8 miles from Polkville, NC. Visit their webpage at . Nearby points of interest would include the Biltmore, Lake Lure, NASCAR in Charlotte, and Blue Ridge Parkway.

Remembering that first project
By Dennie Newell

Penny and I joined SOWERS a couple of years before we decided to sign-up for our first project because we were being cautious. You know, there are Christian Ministries and then are CHRISTIAN MINISTRIES. We’d only had a very brief encounter with a man who had a huge SOWER decal on the back of his rig and we chased him down to tell us about SOWERS! We signed up for our first project at YWAM-Chico (CA-130) since we knew a young couple on staff at YWAM Chico, CA and figured we could "hide out" with them if this "SOWER thing" didn't work out. Anyway, we had read the guidelines when we received the member packet but did not bother to read them again before we set out for Chico. I did call the Group Leader to advise him we would be showing up Monday morning. And I did think it odd when he responded that "the group would be working when we got there." But I just figured everyone else lived closer than us.
We hooked-up our fifth wheel and left our Central Coast of CA home on Saturday, drove to San Jose, CA. We spent Saturday and Sunday nights with my parents and arrived at the project around 11:30 AM on Monday. As we pulled down the hill toward the RV parking area, I saw a group of guys working on the roof of a building near-by and one of them walked over to meet us. He introduced himself to us as the Group Leader and showed us where to park our RV. After we got unhooked and settled (around 12:30), he advised us that we were supposed to arrive on Saturday, meet with the group, attend church with them on Sunday and start Monday at 7:30 AM with devotions. He was one of the humblest, most unassuming men I had ever met to that day as he advised me that I owed the group 4 hours of work, which I should be able to make up by the end of the project, and suggested we review the guidelines!!! That was one of the best and most memorable projects we ever worked, not only because of this incident, but because of the compassion of the GL and the understanding, welcoming spirit and fellowship exhibited by the entire group!

And so started our time with the SOWER Ministry and, as I was blessed to be elected to the Board and serve as both VP and President, I always had to laugh when I was asked the question "so, what can we do to get these new members to read the guidelines so they don't show up late for their first project?"

So good to see that the renovations at the office have been completed! It looks like it was a very worthwhile project. Thanks for everyone's hard work to get'er'done!
Have you stopped by lately? Please use caution and respect when posting. This is a Closed group (only members can see posts and add posts), but it is still good Facebook etiquette to get permission before you post someone's picture. Thanks!

If you're a member of Facebook, but haven't joined the SOWER Group, click on the icon to join the family! Just enter your member number in the question, and the Administrator will approve you.
While you're on Facebook, don't forget to check out your favorite ministries. Many of our partner ministry locations have a Facebook page and it's a great way to stay up to date on the places you love to serve!

We've reached 800 "Likes" on the SOWER Facebook Page ! If you haven't already given it your thumbs-up,  head over there now! It's a great way to spread the word about our ministry.
Do you have a question or concern for the Board of Trustees?
If you'd like to contact the Board of Trustees, please send an email to Gary Conrad, President, and he'll be happy to direct your question to the entire Board or the appropriate Trustee.
Of course, you are welcome to contact any member of the Board individually by phone or email using the information in the roster.
We are looking for one or two couples that would like to be relief for the SOWER Office Staff in Lindale, Texas. Qualified SOWER couples must be familiar with using computer office software; able to perform general office tasks (phone, email, filing, printing, mailing, etc.); handle property maintenance tasks; and able to follow detail procedures. Selected couples would come into the office for a SOWER project month for training and then be available to relieve the office staff for periods of two weeks to a month. Once trained, scheduling for relief periods will be 6 to 12 months in advance. If you are interested in being a relief couple, please contact Ray Arthur, in the SOWER Office.
This photo was taken at Baldwin Baptist Camp(AL-420) during the April 2019 project. Notice each couple has their furry companion with them. Beautiful setting, with beautiful couples! Dear Sam and Sally...
Dear Sam and Sally,
I see that once again it will soon be time to vote for Trustees. And once again, I find that I don’t know anyone on the ballot. How can I vote for someone I don’t even know?? Or maybe I shouldn’t vote if I don’t know anyone?
Wanting to do the right thing

Dear Wanting,
Thanks for asking such a timely question! Given the nature of our ministry – we are folks from all areas of the country (continent, actually!) working at over 170 different ministries – it is often the case that we just don’t ‘know’ any of the good people that have been nominated. In the upcoming Sowergram (should be online by the 17th and in the mail shortly thereafter) you will find complete resumes of all of the candidates. You will be able to see how many years they’ve been a SOWER, how many projects they have worked, and how many times they have been Group Leader. All of the candidates will answer several questions that will give you an idea of their background, their vision for our ministry, and their desire to serve in a leadership role. If you still feel the need to get to know a candidate better, please feel free to give them a call! We're glad you want to be informed before you vote, and we encourage everyone to vote as it’s an important part our ministry.
