UPCOMING EVENTS

IN THE NEWS

It's time to take bold and creative action to address our housing crisis.

I applaud Premier Ford, Minister Flack, and the Government of Ontario for their leadership in speeding up housing construction.

The new measures will speed up new construction by simplifying and standardizing development charges.

In Vaughan, we're doing our part by reducing development charges by 50% and using every tool available to ensure more affordable housing for our residents.

We were one of the first municipalities to reduce costly local development fees that can add hundreds of thousands of dollars to the cost of new homes.

But we also need the federal government to help address this issue.

No more wasting time on consultations, we need to all work together to get this done right.

The time is now.

A significant milestone was reached in April on the Canada Drive-America Avenue Bridge, as crews successfully installed the bridge girders – large horizontal beams – over Highway 400, linking the future bridge to Canada Drive and America Avenue. For more: vaughan.ca/CDAABridge

I joined Mayor Alex Nuttall and Mayor Carolyn Parrish at the Building Industry and Land Development Association (BILD) & Ontario Home Builders' Association (OHBA) Housing Summit in Vaughan for a candid and timely Mayors' Fireside Chat on the housing crisis.

We are beyond the point of business as usual. The status quo isn't working - and we need to disrupt it.

In Vaughan, we've taken action by reducing development charges to ease the burden on new homebuyers. But we also need to take a hard look at the assumptions behind the numbers in our background studies. Are we truly pricing things accurately and fairly?

Home ownership must remain attainable, accessible and affordable - not just for us, but for our children and grandchildren. If we don't act, we risk tearing at the fabric of our communities.

This is the moment to stop talking and start acting. We need all levels of government at the table, working together to deliver real, immediate solutions that address the housing crisis head-on.

I'm an optimist by nature — but optimism demands action. The window to get this right is narrow, and the stakes couldn't be higher.

RECAP FROM APRIL

In April, we hosted the inaugural Celebration of Community Spirit event at City Hall. It was a celebration of the individuals in our community whose generosity uplifts and strengthens the city. Thank you for all you do to make Vaughan a better place!

The City of Vaughan’s annual Volunteer Recognition Awards shine a spotlight on the outstanding contributions of local volunteers – including 64 people who made a significant difference in the community last year!

To mark Yom HaShoah, Mayor Steven Del Duca, Members of Council and Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center held a special event at City Hall with remarks from Holocaust survivor Renate Krakauer and grade 12 student Dalia Balder. Thank you to all who joined us.
