Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month
May is Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, which celebrates the histories of Americans who come from Asia and from the Pacific islands of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia.
This important time of recognition was originally only a week, introduced to Congress by Rep. Frank Horton in 1977. The idea came from one of Rep. Horton's staffers, Jeanie Jew, whos great grandfather M.Y. Lee was tragically killed during a period of anti-Asian unrest in the U.S. Mr. Lee immigrated to the U.S from China in the 1800's and was an important figure in the construction of the transcontinental railroad.
May was chosen as the time to recognize Asian & Pacific Islander heritage because of two important dates: May 7th and May 10th. On May 7, 1843, the first Japanese immigrants arrived to the U.S. On May 10th, 1869, the transcontinental railroad was completed, a feat not possible without the significant contributions from Chinese workers.
CCE Suffolk recognizes and celebrates Asian & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and encourage all to learn more about the history of Asian & Pacific Islander immigrants and their legacy in the U.S.

News12 Long Island:
East End Vineyards Fear Potential Impact of Spotted Lanternfly Infestation
CCE Suffolk Entomologist Daniel Gilrein was interviewed for this News 12 Long Island story on the spotted lanternfly and the threat it poses to Long Island wineries.
Read here
The spotted lanternfly is an invasive and unusually large (1” long) planthopper. Individual adult lanternflies have been found on Long Island, but no egg masses or other stages and no populations.
If you see a spotted lanternfly in New York:
- Take pictures of the insect, egg masses, or infestations.
- If possible, collect the insect. Place in a bag and freeze, or in a jar with rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer.
- Note the location (street address and zip code, intersecting roads, landmarks, or GPS coordinates)
-
Email pictures and location to spottedlanternfly@agriculture.ny.gov OR fill out the online form

Ask the Family Educator
by Maxine Cohen, Parent Educator
May is Mental Health Awareness Month; what can we do about children who seem to be anxious?
Mental health problems among young people have skyrocketed in recent years, probably as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic as well as increasing challenges in our society. Children who are depressed or anxious, or show other signs of poor mental health, can be helped. Unfortunately, annual pediatric exams have been primarily focused on a child’s physical health.
A new recommendation of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (a panel of U.S. healthcare experts) is to annually screen children, ages 8-18, for anxiety. In this way, mental health conditions can be detected and treated earlier. This assessment (consisting of a series of questionnaires) can help medical providers determine whether a child is going through a tough period or is experiencing an ongoing mental health issue which adversely affects daily coping skills.
The new recommendation will most likely result in anxiety screenings becoming a regular part of annual check-ups. If a child is diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, a combination of prescription medications and therapy can help. The task force also stresses the importance of screening teens for suicidal thoughts. It is important for parents to seek help when they notice changes in their child’s behavior.

For the last 5 years, Valerie has been a committed CCE Suffolk team member and invaluable asset to the organization as Human Resources Director. She joined our team shortly before our home building began experiencing issues with air quality, showcasing her dedication early as she relocated about 75 staff members to safer environments while the problem was addressed. Valerie then led us through the COVID-19 pandemic, becoming the go-to source for guidance and proper protocol. This was also a transitional time for our organization as we welcomed a new Executive Director, with Valerie working alongside interim co-ED's Chris Pickerell and Nora Catlin to support the administrative side of the organization during this period.
Valerie handled these developments, along with her daily responsibilities as HR Director, with grace and intelligence. On top of it all, she was a leader in the Events Planning Committee and DEIB Workgroup. Her efforts lent themselves to fun and engaging staff events, and a focus on how our organization can be more inclusive for the benefit of those we serve.
All the best to Valerie as she moves on to her next professional chapter, you will surely be missed!

Want to be a citizen scientist?
Volunteers participating in this horseshoe crab survey will be helping to collect data on spawning abundance, size, sex and tag returns around full and new moon events in May and June. Trained site coordinators will be present to teach you how to help with the survey. Sites are throughout Suffolk, Nassau, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island.
Horseshoe crabs play a vital role in the biomedical industry. The blood of the horseshoe crab contains a protein called Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) and is used by pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers to test their products for the presence of endotoxins and bacterial substances that can cause fevers and even be fatal to humans. This is critical to maintaining the safety of many drugs and devices used in medical care.
