Hartford was a popular destination for us in April as we received amazing support from CCM-CT on April 11, the Bridgeport Legislative delegation on April 12 and the entire Connecticut State House and State Senate on April 25. We are now "teeing" things up for a marvelous day on
May 21 at Brooklawn Country Club as a record-setting Golf
Classic is well within reach.

Program Highlights
|
Once again our residents were honored to enjoy an Easter dinner provided by Christel Truglia and Lester McKoy. Here are some things about them that you may not know:
Christel was elected into office as a state representative in 1988, where she remained undefeated during elections for two decades. As a state representative, Christel was appointed to be the assistant
Majority Leader
.
She served on several legislative committees, including
Appropriations Committee, Human Services Committee, and the Select Committee on Children. In 1996, Christel founded the Truglia Thumbelina Fund to help children in Stamford. She also established a toy closet in 2005 called "David's Treasure Tree Toy Closet" (in memory of a boy named David who died of leukemia at a young age) for children who visit Stamford Hospital. Christel has been a supporter of Homes for the Brave since its inception and why our dining room is named for her.
Lester
served with the Stamford Police Department from 1974 to 2001, where he was promoted through the ranks from patrolman to deputy chief and commanded, supervised, or served with every major division of the department. He then served as Chief of Support Services, Assistant Chief of Police in Hartford until his retirement in 2011. A member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE), and the F.B.I. National Academy Associates, McKoy has served on the Boards of Directors for the Stamford YMCA, Stamford Child Care Center, Truglia Thumbelina Fund Foundation, the Connecticut Community for Drug Free Youth, the Stamford Mayor's South End Neighborhood Revitalization Zone and the Stamford Mayor's Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving Task Force. Lester served with the United States Army and received an honorable discharge at the rank of Sergeant.
Thank you, Christel and Lester, for working tirelessly to serve others - and never forgetting our Veterans.

Partnership Highlights |
April was another full month of building partnerships to build awareness about the needs of Veterans. US Senator Murphy is conducting a Veterans Outreach opportunity each month at Homes for the Brave. The Fairfield Legislative Delegation held a Veterans Resource Fair and Stuff-A-Humvee event at Ludlowe Middle School. VFW Day for a Vet was held on April 15th in Milford. The Danbury Vet Center Group comes to Homes for the Brave twice a month to assist Veterans. We attended Bridgeport Day at the State Capitol to advocate for Veterans. State Legislators (Sen. Flexer, Sen. Martin, Rep. Hennessy, and Rep. Ferraro) led the Help-A-Hero event at the State Capitol which included filling a humvee with basic needs items.

Along with all of the activities above, we were honored to be one of 3 charities benefiting from Connecticut Conference of Municipalities (CCM-CT) inaugural Triple Crown event, which was a huge success! We are deeply grateful to CCM-CT and to all who donated to the event or attended and helped support Homes for the Brave, Channel 3 Kids Camp, and The Village.

Gifts and Support
|
It's all of us working together that are helping homeless Veterans return to a productive and meaningful life. Thank you to everyone who invited us to speak to their organization this month, prepared and served meals, donated to sponsor our Friday Pizza Nights, volunteered their time to teach a Life Skills or Employment workshop, or conducted a supply drive to ensure those coming in off the streets have their basic needs met.
