MY HERO May Newsletter
Dear Friends,

We are grateful for science and leadership that has helped vaccinate so many. As we begin to resume some normal activities, our hearts go out to all who have lost loved ones and to those who are still suffering from the pandemic.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month and we realize the need for social-emotional support for teachers, students, and their families who have navigated this difficult year. MY HERO has media resources to help lift spirits, provide hope, and engage youth in creative self-expression. We are thankful for the feedback we receive from teachers and students, who help us improve this interactive storytelling project.

This is a difficult time in history, and MY HERO creates an awareness of everyday individuals - heroes, not just problems in our society. We need more positivity. Before deciding on heroes or beginning their stories, my students have to collaborate with their families on defining the characteristics of a hero. They then have to interview their parents about their childhoods. Students experience a newfound respect for their families and connections that will impact the rest of their lives.”

Spotlight on MY HERO Intern
Kitty Richardson
Kitty Richardson is a college student at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom. She started her internship in September 2020. She has completed several short film projects and contributed music compositions and social media, adding her unique vision to our global learning community. She is receiving academic credit and has earned admiration and respect from all at MY HERO.

"My experience working with MY HERO has been life-changing. I have been welcomed into the community with open arms and mentored by many brilliant members of the team. MY HERO has given me the opportunity to explore so many different avenues and enhance my talents— I have written a song celebrating Unsung Heroes (which won 1st place at the song contest), created short informational videos for the MY HERO calendar, conducted interviews with influencers who I have followed for years, and worked with the MY HERO team on larger projects. I feel honoured to be a part of such an important and impactful mission, and am so grateful for MY HERO’s willingness to work with students on improving their skills and introducing them to their wonderful project." — Kitty Richardson
