Pregnancy Mask & Melasma

pregnancy maskMelasma is a pigmentary condition characterized by tan or brown patches most commonly on the face. Hormones, ultraviolet light, and genetics are predisposing factors.

Some women develop melasma during pregnancy and find that the areas of darkened skin will fade over time and return to normal color a few months after delivery. In some women, the melasma lasts until they stop breastfeeding, and in an unlucky few it never goes away completely. In this group of patients, it becomes a chronic recurrent condition and may not even be associated with pregnancy, but often has some hormonal basis (like oral contraception pills).

If you have melasma, try to limit your exposure to sunlight. Use sunscreen at all times, because sunlight will worsen your condition.

There are treatment options for melasma. "Melasma is a frustrating condition for patients and, unfortunately, there is often no "quick fix," said Dr. Michael Contreras. "Studies show that strict sun protection (preferably a zinc containing sunscreen at least SPF 30) and a topical hydroquinone formulation 4% or higher are the most effective first line treatments. In resistant cases I like to add chemical peels and intense pulsed light or non-ablative fractional laser procedures," added Contreras.

AboutSkin offers prescription hydroquinone in a variety of formulations, peels and laser treatments. Ask your doctor what is best for you.

Aspirin May Prevent Melanoma in Women

Aspirin may have another benefit in addition to relieving pain and decreasing some heart attacks. The common, over-the-counter tablet may also help reduce a woman's risk for melanoma (the most dangerous type of skin cancer) a new study suggests.

Researchers found that postmenopausal women who used aspirin two or more times a week had a 21% lower risk of developing melanoma than women who did not take the pain reliever.
