Staff Pick of the Month
by Kazuo Ishiguro
(PR6059.S5 K57 2021)

Klara and the Sun is the latest novel by Nobel and Booker Prize-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro. Set in a dystopian near future, the story follows Klara, an artificial intelligence set in the body of a young girl, as she navigates a world that simultaneously celebrates and reviles her existence. Her job is to be an "artificial friend" for her owner, Josie, a teenager struggling with a life-threatening illness. Narrated from the naive point-of-view of Klara, who has a narrow scope of the world and its workings, the reader can see the larger motives at hand and will find it hard not to sympathize with her.

Ishiguro's novel is a reflective work of speculative fiction that examines companionship, existentialism, innocence, and love. It is recommended to anyone who is a fan of literary science fiction.
