Follow Your Bliss

If you follow your bliss, you put yourself on a kind of track that has been there all the while, waiting for you, and the life that you ought to be living is the one you are living. Wherever you are -- if you are following your bliss, you are enjoying that refreshment, that life within you, all the time.

"Let's go." "We can't." "Why not?" "We're waiting for Godot."
Samuel Beckett, Waiting for Godot

A cornerstone of 20th Century theatre and a favorite of college, English professors everywhere - Waiting for Godot, is the existential story about two men waiting in the middle of nowhere for someone or something named, Godot. It's a perfect story that elucidates that awkward, un-grounded and disquieting feeling of disconnection and lack of direction that all of us experience in our lives from time to time.

It's about that ultimate, existential query:

Why am I here?

How we each answer that question for ourselves really defines not just who we are, but what we do with our lives, and how we do it. It's the biggie, isn't it? And the answer can be surprisingly elusive at times. Additionally, what our answer may be at one point in time can be very different from the answer at another. Not only can the big, "life-size versions" of our answers change over time, but the smaller, "moment-to-moment" answers can change as well. It's kinda tricky stuff.

And hard as it can be to deal with the ever changing landscape of our existence - isn't it worth spending some time really considering this question now and again? After all, if we don't ask - how can we challenge ourselves to answer? How do we connect with our fundamental sense of self; our core values, goals and passions if we do not endure a little discomfort with asking ourselves the big questions?

I believe that in order to move ourselves forward - we have to be willing to really "get in there" and make it happen. Yep, it can be hard, scary, and fraught with unknowns and peril - but it's where all the good stuff happens, too. So whether you are setting goals for the big picture or making plans for the day - get in there and really work it - as the experience, in and of itself, is a part of the answer and not only your life but those you will effect, deserve your thoughtful attention.
