In April, the Auraria Student body voted 70% in favor of increasing our funding to specifically address campus-wide compost on campus and reducing our waste diversion rate! Now our focus turns to implementation. While COVID-19 has thrown us some challenges, we're still focused on implementing the vision of the students. Beginning in the Fall of 2020, we'll begin deploying compost bins in high traffic areas outdoors and in vendor areas, and we will provide all vendors with back-of-house access to composting. We are aiming for a full campus-wide rollout as of Spring 2021, which would include bathrooms and lounge areas where we can capture even more material.
Our campus generates more than 2 million pounds of landfill waste each year and we're looking to capture the compostable items from our overall waste stream in order to divert valuable organic materials to our compost streams. This will help us achieve our ultimate goal of diverting 35% of our waste from the landfill by 2022!
