Enrich your life with us!

Issue 128

Greetings !

April was another busy month here at Headingley Seniors’ Services! We did a group outing to the Real Escape and enjoyed an hour of brain testing fun. Our team did awesome and we escaped with only 33 seconds remaining!

We hosted another Lunch & Learn on how to prepare for emergencies, with our Emergency Coordinator Barb Gillis. If you were not able to attend the presentation, information handouts are available in the office or visit getprepared.gc.ca for more information.

April also brought with it volunteer appreciation week! We have countless volunteers who help to keep things running smoothly. Our volunteers take on many important responsibilities including driving to appointments, meal delivery, attendance taking for programming, making & serving lunch, cleaning & organization, ticket taking at community events, sitting on our Senior Advisory Committee, planning & running our holiday market fundraiser, and so much more! We are so very grateful for the time these individuals give to help their community thrive. Thank you!

May 4-11th is “Let No One Be Alone” week. This issue will highlight the importance socialization plays in our overall well-being. In honor of this week, we encourage everyone to bring a friend or neighbor to lunch or a program this week! Lunch for newcomers is free! Lets take time to make sure those that are alone know that we care.

Take care,

Kristie & Margo

Article

This month we are recognizing Let No One Be Alone week.

Social isolation and loneliness are two unique experiences. Social isolation refers to not having many people to interact with; whereas loneliness is how people feel about their social network. Social isolation is not necessarily a choice. 20% of Canadians aged 65+ are at risk of social isolation, and 1 in 3 would say they would like to participate in more social activities. There is a strong association between isolation and loneliness and poorer physical & mental health outcomes. Often people don’t want to be labelled as lonely and are reluctant to discuss these feelings with health care providers. Let’s break that stigma! If you are experiencing feelings of loneliness or feel like you could benefit from more socialization, Headingley Seniors’ Services has many wonderful opportunities to engage with others in a way that feels best for you. We are here for friendly visiting, to offer suggestions, to offer programming, and to provide you with resources to help improve your mental and physical wellbeing so you can continue to live a full & independent life.

Some things you can start doing today to increase socialization:

  •  Call a friend or neighbor to chat.
  • Schedule regular visits with someone you trust.
  • Join a local club or group.
  • Sign up for a recreational activity or workshop of interest.
  • Stay active. Regular exercise boosts mood and mental well-being.
  • Sign up for our newsletter to learn about programs & events within Headingley.
  • Embrace technology. Use video calls and social media to connect with those from near & far.
  • Explore hobbies and pursue interests for enjoyment and socialization.
  • Seek support. Talk to friends, family, resource coordinator or health professionals about your feelings. You are not alone. Sometimes simply feeling heard can provide relief.
  • Volunteer. Many opportunities exist in the community to give back, increase your sense of purpose, and meet new friends and neighbors.
  • Challenge yourself this week to call someone living alone to invite them over for coffee, out for a walk, or simply to tell them you care.
