Governor Whitmer Wants to Hear From You on Climate Change
Last September, Governor Whitmer announced a plan to make Michigan carbon-neutral by 2050, creating the MI Healthy Climate Plan. Now, the state wants to hear from you with ideas for how Michigan can reach its goal. As many of you know, adopting a plant-based diet is one of the single best things we can do for the environment, decreasing our carbon footprints by 50%. Hope for Welfare Improvement in the Egg Industry
New technology is being developed at universities and other research facilities that will identify the sex of a baby chick on the day the egg is laid. Currently, the egg industry kills approximately 6 billion day-old male chicks each year and the hope is to end this practice over the next five years. Please read VegMichigan's blog to learn more.

Detroit People's Food Co-op to Break Ground This Summer
The Detroit People's Food Co-op (DPFC) is an innovative, Black-led startup food co-op that is one piece of a larger vision of Black food sovereignty set out by the Detroit Black Community Food Security Network (DBCFSN). DPFC will be a full-service grocery store focused on natural and organic foods, as well as hot and cold prepared foods, including vegan options. This will be the first co-op in the city since 2004 and it has more than 1100 owners already. DPFC is getting close to breaking ground on their retail store, which will be located at 8324 Woodward Ave. in Detroit's North End. Join the food co-op in its mission to bring fresh & healthy food options to Detroit with a co-op that is owned and driven by the community. VegMichigan is proud to be a sponsor of this year's Runs on Plants events, which include an 8-mile race, 5K race, and kids run on Saturday, June 5, 2021, either in-person or virtually, to promote a healthy active lifestyle being powered by plants. The in-person races will be held at Indian Springs Metropark at the Meadowlark Pavilion, 5200 Indian Trail in White Lake. Each registered participant will receive a custom race shirt and a drawstring bag filled with vegan goodies. Learn more and register here.

Last month, in partnership with the Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV), we hosted Chefs Nate and Luna from Cooking Up Vegan as a special virtual presentation for HSHV volunteers during National Volunteer Week.
