The IRS is experiencing unprecedented delays this filing season. Here is what you need to know:
-
Quarterly Payments: The IRS announced that they were unable to process many of the quarterly payments submitted by taxpayers for the April 15th deadline. The issue has been resolved and payments are now being processed. If your 1st quarter estimates did not go through on April 15th, the IRS is urging taxpayers not to re-submit payments. If you did re-submit any of these payment requests due to the delay in processing, you may cancel the request by calling 1-888-353-4537.
-
Refunds: The IRS is holding over 29 million returns for manual processing. Returns impacted by the tax law changes have to be processed by an IRS employee. These returns are being placed in "suspense" until an employee is able to review them. While returns are in this queue, the IRS system will not provide an evident reason on why the return is being held. If you are experiencing delays receiving your refund, please be patient.
-
Customer Service: With the added workload, the IRS is currently answering approximately 2% of calls received on the 1040 help lines.
