Facilities
Please be aware that all Glenora Community League facilities are closed. This includes the basketball courts, the tennis courts, the hockey rink, the waterpark, the hall, and the playground.
The City of Edmonton is creating a "Use" policy, and until such a time as it is released, all facilities are not to be used.
#StayHome
"And the people stayed home. And read books, and listened, and rested, and exercised, and made art, and played games, and learned new ways of being, and were still. And listened more deeply. Some meditated, some prayed, some danced. Some met their shadows. And the people began to think differently.

And the people healed. And, in the absence of people living in ignorant, dangerous, mindless, and heartless ways, the earth began to heal.

And when the danger passed, and the people joined together again, they grieved their losses, and made new choices, and dreamed new images, and created new ways to live and heal the earth fully, as they had been healed."

President
I love Spring!! It is a time when we emerge from our homes after a long winter of cocooning ourselves. But this year, it has a different feel. As we spend time cleaning up in our yards, we are having conversations with our
neighbours from a distance. We are all in the same situation and there is
comfort in this. We know we are keeping our social distance for the greater good and we can only hope that it won’t be too long before we can offer an embrace to our friends and neighbours. But until then, I feel joy as I walk and bike around our wonderful neighbourhood…I see people talking from across their fences or even sitting on lawn chairs in their front yard strategically placed 6 feet away from each other. We are social beings and we are making the best of the situation. And I am reminded on a daily basis how amazing the human spirit is and how we are staying connected despite the physical distance. So I encourage you to wave and say hi to all the walkers/joggers and bike riders that go by your house…a greeting goes a long way in this new reality. Wishing everyone safety and sanity!!
Preschool
Glenora Preschool is a parent owned, parent operated cooperative offering classes for children ages 3 and 4 years old. Classes are held in the Glenora Community League located at 10426 136 St.
Glenora Preschool is a uniquely diverse and inclusive program for children ages three and four. We provide a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment where children can grow to their full potential through:
  • An art based program.
  • Quality programming with a focus on each individual child's needs and interests.
  • Whole child development wherein each child is nurtured emotionally, socially, physically, creatively, and intellectually.
Although classes are not currently in session due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are preparing for next school year as usual. A few spots remain in our 2020/2021 classes. Registration forms are available for download on the website, http://glenorapreschool.ca or contact the registrar, Sarah Shopland, at 780-938-0366 or sarahd5@hotmail.com
Canada Soccer has been and will continue to closely monitor all COVID-19 developments in consultation with all public health authorities and relevant governing bodies.

Teams have been built and we are prepared to play if facilities are re-opened.

We are expecting an update from the province on May 1 and will inform all families with registered, paid players at that time how things will be proceeding. Thank you for your patience and please take good care of you and your player!

Cumming's Corner: Greetings From your MP
Dear Constituents,

I am taking advantage of this newsletter to express my solidarity with you during these unbelievable
times that we are navigating together. When I was elected last fall, I could never have imagined that we
would find ourselves in a pandemic two seasons later. I hope you are all able to follow the public health
measures currently in place in our province. On my part I have been working from home as I am sure
many of you have as well, and have become very familiar with platforms like Zoom, Google Hangouts,
Skype, both for professional and personal purposes.

Part of the job has included virtual sittings of the Standing Committee on Finance, which you can find
online either on my Facebook page or via the Parliament website, and I have also tried to keep track of
all the announcements made by the federal government in the past six weeks. I have been speaking with
many interest groups and stakeholders and learning how they have been affected by the pandemic
measures, and I have been advocating for them with the federal government in Ottawa. Whether
emphasizing commercial rent relief as an important issue, or including the non-profit sector in the
measures in place, these are important issues to stand up for and speak out on.

Please use my website as a reference point for government programs (the information on it is taken
from government websites and referenced accordingly), and if you have experienced any issues applying
for the federal programs in place, whether as an individual applicant, or a business owner, please feel
free to email me about it. While we are not taking walk-ins at my constituency office, my staff and I
remain available to you by phone/email (780-442-1888 and james.cumming@parl.gc.ca).

If you are a business owner and think that you might be able to reopen whenever the province considers
it safe to do so, please let me know as I would like to be there and support you. Similarly, if as an
entrepreneur you don’t think you’ll be able to carry on, I would like to hear from you and pass on your
concerns and specific issues to the federal government.

I hope you are staying safe and healthy, and thanks to everyone’s efforts we are slowly on the way to
flatten the curve. See you on the other side, in the community.

Regards,
James Cummings
Edmonton Center MP
Hoffman's House: Greetings from your MLA
I wanted to take this opportunity to touch base. As your MLA, I regularly reflect on my role and my responsibilities to my constituents in the community. My job has a lot of different elements to it. The heart of it is about listening to and representing the people of Edmonton-Glenora. It also includes helping
constituents, debating legislation and budgets in the Assembly, and meeting with members of the public and advocating for them.

The most important part of my job is to advocate for things that help my constituents, and all Albertans. During a pandemic the stakes are high and determining what makes people’s lives better might shift focus. Some of the things I am focusing on now are ensuring students and families feel supported
through this crisis.

I am currently advocating for the rehire of more than 20,000 educational staff. I have proposed a new grant program that would provide a one-time payment of $250 for each child enrolled in preschool and K-12 education and $300 for each child with special needs. The funds would be directed to families to help them buy equipment, supplies, and other supports to help students learn at home.

My colleagues and I want to see measures that will ensure Albertans have jobs during and after this pandemic. We are putting forward a short-term plan to immediately protect Albertans’ jobs and support struggling small businesses, charities, and non-profits during the COVID-19 pandemic. The plan includes:
  • An emergency rent subsidy up to a maximum of $10,000.
  • A backstop of up to $7,500 for landlords who agree to defer rent for three months for businesses during the pandemic. Businesses will have the ability to pay back the amount owing over the subsequent 18 months.
  • Insurance premium freeze retroactive to March 18, 2020 and a 50 per cent reduction for insurance premiums until December 31, 2020.
  • $5,000 to help small businesses adapt to the business environment created by the pandemic and introduce new technology to continue operating.
  • A $10 million guarantee for festivals that support small businesses.

Small businesses have told me these initiatives could help keep their businesses afloat, and would help them succeed when conditions return to normal.

Essential service workers are saving lives, keeping our communities safe, helping ensure we can put food in our fridges, and so much more. I encourage you to join me outside on Saturday nights at 7pm to clap or bang pots and pans for a few minutes to show appreciation.
