We held a meeting of the Board on May 1st. It's the second meeting of the Board in 5 weeks since the AGM on March 30th!
I am pleased to report that two grants have been applied for. One to the Campbell River Foundation for $6,000 to replace two computers on the front desk and two computers in the upstairs office. The other one is to Microsoft to cover the cost of Office 365 and implementing new email addresses.
The overhead light fixtures in the Dining Room and Helen's Hall pool table area are being upgraded in the second week of May - on a Tuesday when the ladders will not interfere with a relaxing lunch. The City, which holds the lease for our space, is covering the cost.
Recently I contacted the Mayor's Office about another matter. The Center needs financial support for daily staffing in the Kitchen and daily staffing on the Front Desk. When the finances for these two positions are secured, our volunteers will feel less stress in their own shifts. During my phone call it was suggested to me that a letter be sent right away for possible discussion by Council at its May 11th meeting. My letter was delivered on April 27th.
Our Vice President and Activity Director, Dot Muir, is experimenting with bus tours. She is looking for interest in reasonably priced tours with a sign up sheet on the front desk. There will also be a sign up sheet for members interested in making music with their instruments - with enough interest we will have a jam session.
We are very happy to help the family in their celebration of the life of Jessie Belcher. Jessie was a very energetic member of the Center for years. Her role in establishing the Center as an independent Society was recognized in 2017 when our new-at-the-time activity room was named Jessie's Place. This room will be the venue for the celebration of Jessie's life on May 5th.
The directors on the Board and I are looking forward to honouring Mother's Day on Friday May12th (a bit early) with roast beef on the menu and a complimentary carnation for each woman who visits the Center on May 12th.
At the end of the month, on Saturday, May 27th, we will sponsor a Hot Dog Sale on our patio, weather permitting. This will be the first time that our new donated stainless steel BBQ is used. Proceeds are going towards pool table repairs.
