A NEW Summer Camp Opens in Fayette County
Camp Drift-A-Bit, is a project of the New River Gorge Learning Co-op
It is the mission of Camp Drift-A-Bit to empower young Southern West Virginians to explore and care for their natural environment through outdoor adventure, community service, and environmental stewardship. We encourage children to embrace their natural curiosity to inspire confidence in their ability to learn. We create opportunities for children to become:
Curious
by looking deeply at natural wonders, both big and small, that surround us each day in our own backyard.
Courageous
by empowering each child to challenge their perceived comfort zone, through adventure and activities facilitated in an emotionally and physically safe environment.
Confident
by practicing skills to become effective team players and leaders.
Camp Drift-A-Bit will offer 3 camp sessions:
High Adventure Session 1; Ages 9-14 (6/18/2018 - 6/22/2018)
High Adventure Session 2: Ages 9-14 (6/25/2018 - 6/29/2018)
Outdoor Experiential Education Session 1: Ages 6 - 12 (7/09/2018 - 7/13/2018)

Hello, My name is Jennifer Slinker.
I have been hosting foreign exchange students since 2010. I recently became a Community Representative for Ayusa and love to share my experience in hosting students from overseas in my home. If you want to change the world, you can start small. Cultural and educational exchange with a student from abroad who is eager to learn about American customs is a great way to change the world. Did you realize foreign exchange is actually a part of our American foreign policy? You will be amazed at how much you learn by hosting a student in your home, and how close you can become to them in 5 to 10 months.
I look forward to helping you share your part of West Virginia and American culture. I have over 300 students that are looking for an opportunity to come to America this fall. Please contact me at email or go to www.ayusa.org to learn more information about hosting a student today!

Popular "Get Active in the Park" Program Seeks New Instructors
The National Park Service (NPS) and Active Southern West Virginia (Active SWV) have entered into the third year of a successful partnership known as the "Get Active in the Park" program. The program helps connect local residents to the national parks of southern West Virginia by offering free, beginner-level, guided activities and mini-classes at New River Gorge National River and Bluestone National Scenic River. Community members receive free training to become "Community Captains", and instruct outdoor recreation classes in the parks and throughout Nicholas, Fayette, Raleigh, and Summers counties. Due to the program's popularity, additional volunteers are needed. The first training of 2018 will be held on May 5th and 6th in Glen Jean, WV.
Volunteers, called "Community Captains", participate in Leadership training to understand risk management guidelines, group dynamics, and communication techniques, as well as first-aid and CPR. Training to become an initial instructor and ongoing support are provided for free by Active SWV. Previous leadership experience is not required but having values in active living, community service, and appreciation for public lands (parks) are needed to continue the growth of this program to reach more residents in southern West Virginia to improve their quality of life. Local residents interested in becoming a Community Captain should contact [email protected] or 304-254-8488 to learn more.
Last year roughly 800 local residents attended Get Active in the Park programs, 87% of which reported that they felt more comfortable visiting national parks after attending. Program participants overwhelmingly reported that the experience was "restorative and relaxing". Many reported, "fun with family and friends", with families reporting that they "got my kids out of the house for a family adventure" or "spent time with my kids with no electronics- hooray!". Additionally, participants felt healthy, reporting, "I can say no to diabetes", or one who even reported, "I'm a stage 4 cancer survivor, just now getting on my feet. Love the exercise".

The Mad Butcher is coming back to the New River Gorge this fall. Dare to explore old abandoned buildings and dark corners of an adventure resort hidden in the woods. Campers and hikers have seen things here that will make your bones turn cold. Be careful not to stir the shadows, or creatures lurking in them. You never know who or what's watching... maybe what's left of those people who never checked out... maybe the thing that keeps them here. Just don't scream, or they'll find you.

A New kind of Family Game Night
By Leslie Kell
So it's up to you to plan a fun family evening. You want to get the kids off of their cell phones, ipads, or whatever electronic device they might have and really just want to bring the whole family together. When planning this family evening, let's say you suggest an old board game like Monopoly, the Game of Life, or even Scrabble. Then, that's when the eyes start rolling, and you've got a bunch of uninterested family members. Also, let's be honest,Twister isn't exactly a great game for everyone in the family! Video games are great, but they are definitely hard to do for the whole family, especially when it's only a two player game! Maybe you could watch a movie for family night, but then it seems that no one can agree on which movie to watch! So now what do you do?
It's time to check out a live escape room! Think about it: for a full hour, no one will be checking instagram, facebook, or snapchat. Also, no one will want to text their friends because they'll be too immersed in the action! If they are texting their friends, it would only be to tell them they are missing out! Escape rooms are all about the fun; plus it's a great activity for a wide range of ages! Your 12 year old can have just as much fun as you and get to participate and solve puzzles with the rest of the family!
Escape rooms also require communication, which make it perfect for a family night, and trust us it will lead to some awesome memories! In addition, rather than competing against each other, families get to work together to achieve a common goal and escape the room as a team! It's everyone against the clock! In fact we say that it's nearly impossible to escape the room by yourself, plus who would want to!? It's always more fun to have a group to go with, and what could be a better group to escape with than your family?
We think it's time to bring a new meaning to family game night, so get everyone together and book your room today! You can do that by clicking the book now button on the top of this page!
