Auburn hosts National Consortium for Nursing Academic Coaches (NCNAC) conference
Auburn University’s Office of Professional and Continuing Education (OPCE) and the College of Nursing have launched an industry-standard coaching credential for nurse educators. In March, Auburn strengthened this new practice by hosting the first National Consortium for Nursing Academic Coaches (NCNAC) conference.
Auburn College of Nursing’s Kendall Henderson started this organization nearly five years ago to connect educators in nursing academia looking for help in supporting their nursing students through academic coaching or student success. More than 150 nurses attended from across the nation for this first-of-its-type conference to hear speakers discuss this evolving field in the nursing profession.
“We spend our lives training and supporting people who are facing hard health-related challenges. This program helps us understand how our colleagues can coach us through some of our own tough times,” said Henderson, an assistant clinical professor and academic coach in the Auburn University College of Nursing.
“The reality is that nursing is a hard career. Newly graduated nurses often experience a higher level of stress than they expect and may leave the bedside after two to three years to move into clinic settings or to return to school,” Henderson said. “We believe that nurse coaching will help build a support network to help address some of the problems they face.”
“Nursing is just one discipline that can benefit from coaching,” according to Dr. Phil Chansler, assistant director of OPCE. “Coaching has broad applications across many fields from business to education to engineering. Building on the nursing model, our goal is to bring coaching support to other professions. It is a proven method of offering in depth support to employees throughout their career.”
For additional information visit the College of Nursing site or contact OPCE.
