WFA President's News - May 2023

Greetings cousins! I hope a beautiful spring has sprung wherever you are! Here in Maryland, we never quite got a typical cold/snowy winter season. But now flowers and trees are blooming and leafing out everywhere to let us know time marches on and the season has changed. That means we are just over a month away from our special time of gathering together for the annual Wing Family reunion, June 22-25 in Merced. California - - here we come! Cyndy Doherty and Jeff Miller have a great time planned for us. More details are in this edition of the newsletter and on our website. I have my travel plans all set and hope to see you there as well.

With this edition of the newsletter our title has been established (“Window on the Wings”) as well as a new graphic. I thank our Communications Committee for their creativity on this.

The Museum Committee continues its hard work. The Curator and Assistant Curator are preparing the Fort House and Wing Family History Center for opening in mid-June. There will be a new exhibit focusing on Wing whaling history. In addition, we are hosting the Spring Hill History Day on June 17.

What's in a Name?

When the newsletter for the Wing Family of America began, it went by the name "The Wing Fort House News". The Communications Committee felt this name was limited and failed to represent so much more of what makes up the history of the Wing family in America besides the Fort House.

Last year we queried the membership for new name suggestions. The input was wonderful, the list of suggestions being both long and creative, and we thank all who participated.

We created a subcommittee dedicated to the naming and chose Window on the Wings.

The 2023 Wing Family Reunion in

Merced, California is coming up fast!

Save the Date: June 22-25

Our featured speaker at our Friday night dinner will be: Sarah Lim, Director of the Merced County Courthouse Museum. Sarah will be speaking about the history of Merced.

For more information and to register www.wingfamily.org/reunion

Many of our Wing Family who aren’t District 13 members may have never heard of Merced. Incorporated in 1855, it is a city of about 85,000 people. Our Wing cousin Jeff Miller lives on a working ranch as do many other citizens of the city. Western style architecture can be seen throughout the town.

There are many things to see and do in Merced and nearby.

The “New” Wing Fort House and History Center

Opens for the Season

Christina Shipps, Wing Curator, spent six weeks at the Fort House last Fall thoroughly cleaning, replastering, scraping wallpaper and painting walls to their original colors. Furniture was rearranged to give each room an authentic period feel. Three hundred years of the life of the Fort House are represented: from the original Fort Room to the bedroom of Cora Wing, the last in a long line of Wing descendants to live in the house.

Dave Wheelock, longtime WFA caretaker and very knowledgeable historian and archeologist, will be on hand to provide tours.

Across the street, the Wing History Center will be displaying Simon Wing’s camera collection as well as a new exhibit “The Whaling Wings.” This exhibit explores the whaling industry in New England and the members of the Wing family who contributed to it.

Come see what’s happening at your home and history center.

Fort House tours are Tuesday through Saturday at 10:00 am, Noon, and 2:00 pm

The Wing Family of America is looking to the future by sharing our past. As you read in this newsletter, the Fort House has undergone a major renewal. We are planning exciting new exhibits for the History Center. These exhibits will tell the story of the Wing Family, its members, and our migration throughout the country and the world from our roots in Massachusetts. We can't do it without the help of our family. When you are planning your end of year charitable donations, we hope you will consider the Wing Family of America.
