Good Times

Time for Three!

What an amazing residency we had with Time for Three, full of music, fun, and inspiration!
Violinists Nick Kendall and Charles Yang along with bassist Ranaan Meyer jumped right in, spending Tuesday afternoon playing back-to-back assemblies at Orcas Center, where every student in the Orcas Island School District got to hear, learn, and be entertained. That evening, a wonderfully diverse group gathered in the Band Room at Orcas High School for a workshop, where they discovered they could relax and play and the music they created was a wonder to hear.

The next day found lucky sippers, noshers, and shoppers at KT Chocolates, Darvill’s, and Island Market joyfully interrupted from their routine by Time for Three popping in for a song. It was such fun to see the reactions of the lucky random folks. And the concert that evening – the crowd went wild, then wild again! There was such energy and beauty and, well, I must say it again – fun!

Thanks to Carl de Boor, Slim and Mimi Sommerville, Barbara Bedell, Janet Ketcham, Orcas Center, the Music Advocacy Group, all the volunteers, the concert goers, the students, all who made this residency such a screaming (“we love you, Time for Three!”) success!

Rachel Buchman is Coming!

Our next Musician-in-Residence will be a special treat for our youngest fans – we are so thrilled that Rachel Buchman will be here for the week of May 7 th -10 th
A native New Yorker, Rachel is now based in Houston, where she teaches at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, and is the Head of the Young Children’s Division of the Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program. We have been lucky enough to have her on the island a number of times, working with the pre-schools and their teachers and offering wonderful Children's Concerts.

While on the island this trip, she will spend her days at all the island pre-schools, as well as Orcas Island Elementary School’s first and second grade music class. The week will culminate on Friday, May 10 th , at 6pm with a good time concert in the atrium of the Funhouse , perfect for the little ones, ages three and up. The concert is free, and open to all who want to have a rousing good time!
Thanks to Sara Jane Johnson for sponsoring Rachel’s visit – there will be giggles, there will be music, there will be joy!
Early Birds!

The lovely month of May, when ticket sales for the August Festival begin! While pre-sales (for donors at the $600 and above level) opened yesterday (and close on May 14 th ), and on-line sales open at 7:00 p.m. on May 16 th , there is one other opportunity to purchase tickets, the most fun way of all! Our Early Birds event, for in-person, on-island ticket purchasing, is on Thursday, May 16 th . Join us out front of Orcas Center, official start time is 8:00 a.m. You must be here, in person, to be an Early Bird, so choose your concerts, wear you warm coat and hat (though who knows, maybe it will be a warm morning…maybe…), and join us for tickets, snacks, coffee, tea, prize-giveaways, maybe a uke sing-along or two, and just a good ol’ time out in the brisk morning air with a bunch of folks who share your love of the music! I can not think of a better way to start the day!
We look forward to sharing more OICMF news and events with you - keep your eyes peeled for next month's Scherzo !
All the best,
