I Am My Mother's Daughter

If you have enjoyed reading my previous books, I invite you to consider my latest offer, available on Amazon.com May 1, 2025.

My mother was my best friend, confidante and inspiration. An unassuming, uneducated woman, she exuded a remarkable confidence bestowed only to those whose faith continues to flourish despite disturbing circumstances. The book, titled, I Am My Mother's Daughter - A Heritage Memoir of Resilience, Devotion, and Transformation, is a collection of her stories, and the journey we forged together as mother and daughter.

“In this powerful heartfelt memoir and tribute to motherhood, Dr. Hilda Villaverde journeys deep into the Latina experience of la familia by retracing the life of her mother, Maria Parra Villaverde-Ramirez. The author shares profound lessons in unconditional love shining through Maria’s encounters with multicultural transitions in her adopted country of the United States, abuse in her home and neighborhoods, and raising four children in an environment of scarce resources.

Her family’s connection with spirits and ancestors adds a layer of mystery and wonder which results in a rich exploration of cultural heritage and spiritual bonds transcending materiality. Maria’s creativity and grace in the face of fear and adversity will inspire you. And her fierce care of her children and friends through great challenges will bring you hope and healing.

If you like to wonder at the inexplicable, revel in redemption stories, and believe in the power of a mother’s love, this book will fascinate you and warm your heart.” -Ann Videan

For Amazon rating purposes, I ask you to purchase I Am My Mother's Daughter today from Amazon.com. Thank you so much.

With love and appreciation,

Hilda

Quote: The difference between perseverance and obstinacy is perseverance is about ‘yes’, and obstinacy is about ‘no.’ -Ethel Blake Ward

Tip Bit: Last month I wrote that I am attending a ten-week course, Scottsdale Government 101, learning as much as I can about Scottsdale. I encourage our city residents to consider this informative and inspiring class to be better informed on how Scottsdale continues to grow, develop, maintain, and manage a beautiful city.

In the past month our 40 attendees had the opportunity to “See the Sights” of Scottsdale on a bus tour starting in downtown Scottsdale. We visited Vista del Camino Community Center that provides a variety of services to Scottsdale residents to prevent homelessness, meet the basic needs of individuals and families in crisis to maintain self-sufficiency. On the same tour, we visited the Gateway Preserve on Bell and Thompson Peak, Westworld and the TPC Champions Course, hearing the complexities of managing and maintaining each facility.

At yet another class, we heard from the directors of Scottsdale’s Parks and Recreation, Public Libraries, Human Services, including the Senior Centers, Youth and Family Services, and the Emergency Management for the city. Touring Scottsdale City Court, the Prosecutors office, public defenders’ office, peek into the city jail and a K-9 presentation with the amazing Belgian Malinois was a favorite for all of us. (I don’t ever want to be arrested and thrown into our city jail!)

The Water Resource Division and Fire Training Facility was fascinating and a reminder that ‘yes’ we live in a desert where water is a precious commodity and our fire fighters’ mission is “We care for you,” you call we come.

Our graduation from Scottsdale Government 101 is May 6 which will include a visit to a City Council Meeting. Awakening, rewarding and inspiring are words I use to describe the past 10 weeks. Scottsdale Government 101…. check it out!

Gateway Community College Cosmetology Foundation

Five years ago, I established the first-ever endowed scholarship for hair styling students at GateWay Community College through their Cosmetology Course of Study. The endowment coincided with my 50th year as a hair stylist and the scholarship will ensure financial support for students who need assistance to graduate and enter a career in the beauty industry.

Last month while visiting the Cosmetology School on 29thAvenue and Bell as I occasionally do, I was impressed by the quality of education and high standards set by the school. The students are enthusiastic about the promise of a future in the beauty industry, and I am grateful for your continued support. We wholeheartedly appreciate your donations.

With gratitude,

Hilda
