Living a “Greener”, Less Wasteful Lifestyle
By Megan Fleck
For my final Eco-Friendly Newsletter contribution (more on that later!), I want to take the time to spotlight one small thing that many of us can do to live a “greener” lifestyle.
Some of you may have noticed “bulk refill markets” opening up in your neighborhoods. These businesses allow customers to bring their own containers to fill with household products such as soap, shampoo, and laundry detergent. By reusing the same containers and purchasing household basics in bulk, customers are able to reduce their plastic waste. Furthermore, many of the products available at these stores are organic and/or locally sourced, further reducing the environmental impact.
According to the EPA, containers and packaging comprise “a major portion” of municipal solid waste, accounting for 82.2 million tons in America in 2018. Of that, 66.2 million tons were paper and paperboard, 41.9 million tons were plastic containers and packaging, and 9.8 million tons were glass containers and packaging. These figures have almost certainly increased since 2018, especially due to shifting recycling policies from Asian countries. I think we all can do a better job of reducing our consumption, and these refill markets are a great place to start.
One of these marketplaces has recently opened near my home in Haddon Township, NJ. Check out the photos below where I explored this new business and bought some household supplies!

I want to take this opportunity to announce that I have taken a new position on Subaru’s Fleet Team and will no longer be working on the Eco-Friendly Retailer Program. My successor is Danielle Sumislaski, and I am confident she will bring the program to another level and that you will all enjoy working with her. Danielle has worked with many Subaru retailers in the past during her tenures in both the Eastern Region and Customer Advocacy Departments. Please join me in welcoming Danielle to the Eco-Friendly Team. Danielle can be reached at dsumis@subaru.com.
I also want to announce that, while Eco-Friendly will not have a booth presence at the 2022 National Business Conference, I will be there and look forward to seeing some of you there!
