Sugar Creek Bible Camp
May 2022

Anticipation is building throughout Sugar Creek Valley as we wait for winter to shed its hold and for the warm sun to green up the grass and tree buds. In my minds eye, I can already hear the excited voices of campers chattering while enjoying activities with staff and counselors. Needless to say, I can hardly wait for summer programming to start!

Did you know that great blue herons are a common visitor at Sugar Creek. The picture below, of the crane in water, was taken by Executive Director, Jesse Klosterboer, last summer.
Great blue herons have a wingspan of 6 feet! If you’ve ever seen them fly you know they are quite impressive with their neck in an S-shape and their long legs streaming out behind them. When standing they are about 3 feet tall, though they can stretch to 4 feet.
Even though Great Blue Herons seem like a big bird, they weigh only 5-6 pounds. Like other birds, their bones are hollow. Great Blue Herons are the largest of the North American herons. They can be found in both freshwater and saltwater habitats. Both parents take turns incubating the eggs for 4 weeks. The young can first fly at about 60 days old.
Maybe you will see one at Sugar Creek this summer!
