Though there was no writer's strike nor A.I. ban affecting the Torch, your editor kept putting off this update until it May nearly ended! May your summer reading begin with this edition.


First, we offer our great thanks to all those who joined the URC for the Interfaith Observance of the National Day of Prayer on May 4. Fr. Edward "Monk" Malloy, CSC, President Emeritus of the University of Notre Dame, brought the URC's 50th Anniversary year to a rousing close, citing work done and supported by the whole community on issues of displacement, homelessness, youth, and disabilities. Monk shared his own experiences of cross-religious efforts as he developed his own spiritual gifts and leadership.

2023 Prayer Breakfast Pics

ONSITE PRAYER MINISTRY: THURSDAY JUNE 1


The On Site Prayer Ministry will be holding a vigil on Thursday, June 1, at 5:30 p.m. The vigil will be for 29-year-old Bruno Lira-Sanagustin, who was shot and killed on May 14 in South Bend. WORLD REFUGEE DAY: JUNE 20, 2023

World Refugee Day, established by the United Nations, is observed on June 20 each year. This year, with leadership from the St. Joseph County Public Library, Neighbor to Neighbor and the City of South Bend, an event and exhibit will launch on June 20.


Stay tuned for details, but there will be a speaker on the evening of the 20th, screening of the movie 'We Are All Refugees,' and a beautiful exhibit featuring stories from new and longer term refugees and asylees now residing in Greater South Bend. Those interviewed come from every inhabited continent.


URC thanks partner organizations, volunteers, and the in particular those whose stories of displacement will be shared with the community. URC will keep updates on our website, and you can also find info at the Library's events page.

South Bend

Global Soccer Tournament


On Saturday, July 15, from 10-1, the URC and partners South Bend Venues Parks and Arts and the South Bend Lions Soccer Club will host our first ever soccer tournament. The tournament will take place at Boehm Park in South Bend. Entry fee is $50 per team; each player must be 18 or older.


This is a recreational tournament, with the goal of encouraging a mix of teams from the variety of countries of origin found in the community. There are spots for 8 teams, of 5-10 members. There will be three (3) games minimum with 20 minute halves. The best two teams will meet in the championship and the event will end by 1 p.m.
